I love the demo stage. I wonder why it's so rewarding?
Take a lot of close-up photos with measurements. You'll need the info during the rebuild.

My husband has been walking around video taping the process, and recording all measurements. I trust he's not leaving any out. He's convinced now to take the walls off and do a complete ground up rebuild, except what we can save of the cabinets and dinette.

This trailer is too rotten to save any of it really. It will barely function as a template.

Hey happy campers! We started taking the skin off our 57 Shasta this weekend. People, more screws is not better! The PO put screws everywhere to keep her together for a little while longer and tons of glue, caulk, and rags. We have almost gotten to all the rats nest as well. Good news is she's not as bad as we thought. I'm posting this weekends pictures. I am trying to decide whether to try and save her skin. It's a big purchase if we don't. What is the best fix for holes (bullet holes)... JB Weld, or Bondo for aluminum? She'll still show her scars, but we all have scares after 50 some odd years. I got them everywhere. Ok... To answer my own question after several hours and about $70 later... I can't make bullet holes look decent. Sooo... I guess we will have to fork out the cash to buy new skins. My biggest problem is the shipping cost as much or more than the aluminum! We considered picking it up ourselves and make it a "vacation". My husband googled the distance from here to NC, or CA, where the two places that we know of to get our specific aluminum, and they are exactly 2 miles difference in distance. I really do live flat in the middle of BFE.
Happy camping.

Shipping is expensive but it is just part of the cost of doing business.

One bullet hole you can cover with a small (oddly place) vent but 50 holes mean it's time for new skin. I like Hemet Valley .03 skin. Much easier to work with and more durable. There is a place in TN that sells skin but I've never tried them.

Thanks guys. We just found out it's going to RAIN tomorrow through Thursday. Up to 1 1/2 inches. It doesn't rain in Southeastern New Mexico after Halloween! We're lucky to see any liquid from the sky until next April. Wish us luck, we are going to put her in the barn. We didn't have her there in the first place because there is no electricity, and our air compressor is next to the house. I hope she stays together without her skin. TN is closer for aluminum. I'm repairing as much of the skin so we can reattach it and take it with us when we go for the aluminum.

nccamper, the demo is so much fun. Replacing rotten wood if so gratifying too! This is the most amazing journey we have ever taken..

My husband googled the distance from here to NC, or CA, where the two places that we know of to get our specific aluminum, and they are exactly 2 miles difference in distance. I really do live flat in the middle of BFE. Happy camping. Sheila We also had the bullet hole problem and wound up with new skin. We did it the easy way, though. We had spent 18 months rebuilding Hamlet while I was going through chemo and radiation, and decided to just suck it up and have him reskinned and painted because we knew we could never do the rest of our work justice if we didnât. We visited three or four RV repair places plus a paint shop and nobody was really interested in the project. We finally wound up at a Camping World about 15 miles away. The folks in the repair shop were so excited to work on a tiny piece of history (Hamletâs an early Compact) that when we were picking the color, we had three or four guys around us looking at paint chips. They did a beautiful job. The aluminum was pre primed, so we only had to have the stripe and bottom painted. He turned out gorgeous. And when I picked him up, all the guys in the shop and most of the folks working in the store came out to watch. The final cost for the skin, assembly and painting was only a couple hundred dollars more than some of the estimates weâd gotten just for bare skin from other places. They took pride in their work and it showed. Aside from the inevitable rock bites, the paint has held up beautifully. I guess what Iâm trying to say is that if the cost of the aluminum is really high, you may want to look at other options. You know whatâs best for you and for your trailer. Good luck!

Yes it is. It took me a long time to research and finally know what she is. We are still working on her. In fact we just picked work on her this past weekend. Itâs so gratifying to watch her begin to stand up straight with new wood. We acquired a 1954 Shasta last weekend, and have decided to give âhimâ Snook, to my sister, after fixing it. The money will help with Daisy.

Hi Sheila,
And 2.6 years later, can you share your progress?
Cheers,
