Bought my old Shasta Compact late last summer. I have been trying to locate the VIN No. for some time. While sanding the tongue over the weekend I happened to notice a metal tag from MHMA, and it had some hard to read numbers on this plate. I went and got a magnifier and I was able to come up with a number. Was having a hard time to read the second to last number. Is there someone here that can give me details if I provide the number on when it was built and where and whatever other info I might need about this trailer so I can take it and get the guy I got it from to sign a form so I get legal title. Thanks for your help! I apologize if this is not the proper place to ask this question .

The MHMA tag would not contain the VIN number, only just the codes for the build at the time of the build. Shasta trailers had the VIN located in two places on the tongue. On the curbside, that is the side where the door is, it is stamped on the outside rail of the tongue. There is also a plate welded inside the streetside rail that contains the VIN also. Of course now that I need it I can't find the handy dandy "Shasta VIN locations" diagram.... In most cases the numbers are obscured from years of weather, rust, and coats of paint. It will take some effort to make the numbers appear. They will usually surface for you if you use a wire cup brush in your drill or scrub the area with a stiff brush. Don't use anything as aggressive as a grinder though, as the stamps can be obliterated rather easily. The VIN should be a set of numbers preceded by a letter. The letter is the code for the manufacturing plant. The numbers were set sequentially at each of the plants, and really do not contain any hard information with regards to model or year built. The age can be deduced from the VIN by comparing to lists of other VIN numbers collected.

I used a palm sander on the weekend to take off some flaky rust particles and did some inside where this plate is supposed to be welded but there is no plate there. I only lightly sanded the outside part of the tongue rail and there is nothing there that looks like anything was etched on the outside. Thanks for your help and if you find the diagram eventually, I would appreciate looking at it.

If it still has the original sink, it may have a date on bottom of it also. My 65 did.

Hi again folks....it has been awhile since I have been on here.....taking Mobiltecs classes and going to start work in the Spring on my Shasta compact 61 or 62, but still have not found my VIN No. on the corroded hitch, but the hitch is in really good condition except for the crank is gone...we had to wrap chains around it to move it a mile down the road. There was black electrical tape wrapped around the propane tanks line to hold them there and I suppose water got in and I have tried sanding with a light duty palm sander but did not do too much. I did manage to find these three number which I know are not VIN #s but might give some clues....they were at the very front of the "V" part of the hitch. The numbers are 2090113; 2188208 (not sure if that second "8" might be a 6; and the third was nice and clear as well 2178094. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide me as I would like to get it registered in my province.
