Aloha All! When I first started looking for a trailer I turned down a couple based on the information on the title not matching what obviously was the case -- Axles = 2. When I'd ask the owner about the difference they'd look dumbfounded, scratch their heads and shrug. Sometimes things are done a little differently in the mountains so I passed on them. I finally did pick up my titled 65 (owner claim)/64 (title claim) Shasta 1500. I, too, took up the dumbfounded, head scratch, shoulder shrug approach and accepted the Axle - 2 claim. When registering/titling it with the DMV I asked them to change the title to reflect its obvious single axle. Accordingly that can't be done because the current title claims otherwise. Ok... not thrilled with the answer but not worth battling. During this time my Handy-Andy-Man, restorer of 40s and 50s Ford trucks, checked two of his titles and was extremely surprised to see that they stated Axle - 4! He's now dumbfounded, scratching his head and shrugging also.
So my question(s) -- in the beginning -- were the trailers listed by number of tires vice actual axles? Was there a different axle system? Does anyone else's title reflect two when you only have one? Or even four if you have two? Any ideas why they are listed as two vice one? I was originally thinking typo or faked until several came up listed as such to include the trucks.
Thoughts? Words of wisdom from the wise? Appreciate all as always.

My Ohio title doesn't list axles.

California doesn't list number of axles on trailers either. Double vision?

Obviously some government genius came up with a new math formula to confuse the general population while being able to generate more revenue. Same story, different topic!

I can certainly go with the governmental new math formula for confusion theory for sure! That aside, has no one else noted the same axle number issue? For those states that denote such anyway. I still find it ... questionable.

It makes my suspicious mind think that someone was playing musical titles.

It makes my suspicious mind think that someone was playing musical titles. That seems to happen quite a bit with these older trailers. I'm about to find out whether or not I should go on with the Kenny. Even if the trailer does not turn up junked or stolen it's going to cost over $700 to register. Don't get me wrong, it's worth it as long as it's registerable.

How about taking it to another state get it registered then bring it back and do a simple transfer.

That's the problem, it makes my mind think suspicious thoughts too -- the reason I walked from my first several (which was a good idea knowing what I know now anyway). But with that said, the one I actually paid money for was titled and has a previous title number listed on my PO's title. I believe it claimed "Original".

How about taking it to another state get it registered then bring it back and do a simple transfer. I asked about that and they told me that no matter what I do, if the trailer has been legally scrapped in California it is illegal to tow it on California roads with that VIN. So the only way would be to illegally grind off the original VIN. Plus, California gives you just ten days to register a trailer in the state just like they do with cars. It is still a vehicle no matter where it is from. If you bring a trailer here from another state you have ten days to get it re-registered and so then you are back at square one.
