Tires now have a two digit code that tells you the weight carrying capacity. The chart below converts to two digit codes to pounds or kilograms. c lb kg c lb kg c lb kg c = code 70 739 335 89 1279 580 108 2205 1000 lb = pounds 71 761 345 90 1323 600 109 2271 1030 kg = kilograms 72 783 355 91 1356 615 110 2337 1060 73 805 365 92 1389 630 111 2403 1090 74 827 375 93 1433 650 112 2469 1120 75 853 387 94 1477 670 113 2535 1150 76 882 400 95 1521 690 114 2601 1180 77 908 412 96 1565 710 115 2679 1215 78 937 425 97 1609 730 116 2756 1250 79 963 437 98 1653 750 117 2833 1285 80 992 450 99 1709 775 118 2910 1320 C LB KG C LB KG C LB KG 81 1019 462 100 1764 800 119 2998 1360 82 1047 475 101 1819 825 120 3086 1400 83 1074 487 102 1874 850 121 3197 1450 84 1102 500 103 1929 875 122 3307 1500 85 1135 515 104 1984 900 123 3417 1550 86 1168 530 105 2039 925 124 3527 1600 87 1201 545 106 2094 950 125 3638 1650 88 1235 560 107 2149 975 126 3748 1700

I think this is a good thing. Unfortunately the people who build "tiny homes" on trailer frames will not read this. Most of those "tiny homes" that I have seen have got to be WAY over weight for both the chassis and the tires.

Most of the tiny homes I see are over weight and over priced plus they look untowable by the average person. Our county has laws against things like that being lived in. They are slowly outlawing all mobile homes. I think a used travel trailer would be a better than most tiny homes.

Does it seem odd to have a 7.00 class C light truck tire on a camper? 7.00 by Corvett crzy, on Flickr

In the days of old that would have been a premium trailer tire. LT Is still acceptable for trailers although ST is preferred.

So mine say "ST175/80R13". I hate to ask but which is the "code"? 80? It also gives a weight capacity on it but I wondered if I could tell from the numbers (the weight capacity is 1380).

The 80 is the height of the side wall. As you look at different vehicles you will see numbers like 40 50 60 70 75 80 85 and if you look you will see that the lower the number the shorter the sidewall height. If your tire shows load capacity in lbs. they were made before the new codes took effect. Look in topic UNDERSTANDING TRAILER TIRES posted Sep 13, 2017 at 6:31pm It might help you under stand tire markings.

This is a reprint of the post mentioned above I am being told no one can find it.
Just a simple explanation of tire markings. on the side of your tire you will find the brand name followed by a series of letters and numbers. Example P215/65R15 95H M&S P=PASSENGER CAR USE (DO NOT USE ON TRAILERS). 215 = NOMINAL WIDTH OF TIRE IN MILLIMETERS. /65 is Aspect ratio (height to width). R= radial. 15 = rim diameter. 95H = load index and max speed symbol (contact your tire dealer to have decoded). M+S indicates this tire has some mud & snow capabilities ALL TRAILER TIRES MUST BE MARKED WITH LT OR ST (LT MEANS LIGHT TRUCK OR TRAILER ST MEANS TRAILER USE ONLY). Some tires will show their max load rating in small letters next to the wheel This is the max load if inflated to the listed max air pressure, as air pressure drops this figure drops dramatically. The DOT number found in next to the wheel indicates it meets federal standards, the next two numbers are the plant code where manufactured, the last four numbers tell when it was built such as 3197 means the 31st week of 1997. If tire has a heat code A is highest B is next then C each is a lower heat rating so if comparing two tires and everything was the same except the heat letter A would be the best. Older tires will be marked differently. Tires older than four years should be replaced. Hope this information proves useful.

Thanks BigBill. Great info.
I went to the tire shop today armed with the info above which baffled the people there. I think I'll settle on a Goodyear Endurance ST tire with a D load range which is over 2000 pounds a tire. They have 8 ply instead of the 6 I have now.
The heartbreaking thing is the old (cheap) tires have only 10,000 miles on them and look great after 4-5 years on the camper.
It seems like just yesterday I was 18 years old at the junkyard climbing on a pile of mismatched tires looking for a $10 tire with some tread left on it. My tires lasted until they were bald.
Memories!

This is the latest federal spec changes probably many shops have not experienced them yet. I haven't seen tires marked with the new weight code yet but it is supposed to be coming. It may take several months for old stock to be sold and new to show up. Manufactures, distributors, and shops will sell exist new tires before you see the change. I just posted the info so that you will know what it means when it arrives.

At Discount Tire outlet they knew the tire goes on a rim and the rim goes on a car.
The woman sales person admitted she started two weeks ago but the two men tried to bluff their way through it with macho swagger. The moral of the story...memorize the info above before shopping for tires.

Discount tire is one of the web sites I checked that is showing tires with the new codes.
