So working on putting in a 7 way in my 1966 Kenskill. All wires except the brakes are routed internally thru the wall interiorly but I can't find location. I checked the tailights and markers are all working with the original wire ends before it routes internally. I checked this with the 12 v battery , a ground wire and hot wire. Question is since it looks good should I rewire it? If I don't re-wire can I run the ground wire for the external lights along the frame grounding it midway and at the end of the frame then attach it to the skin by the taillights?

Anything you can do to improve the ground is a good thing. I like to direct ground each light but sometimes that isn't reasonable so do the best you can.

I like to weld several 1/4" bolts onto the frame, then use those as grounding lugs. I put one close to where the junction box is located, another near where the brakes are by the axle and one at the back end for the tail and marker lamps. But in your case, one at the front and another near the back end so that You will have a very secure ground to the tow unit, then ground the skin to one, or all ground lugs installed.
