We had a blow out recently and it broke the skid guard attached to the bottom of the leaf springs. Does anyone know of a source for these? I've been searching the net and the forum but can't find a source. I'm not real sure of the actual name of the thing. Just its purpose. I have to say it worked well. No damage to the underside of the trailer. Just some tire damage to the wheel well. Got lucky it didn't tear the whole side of the trailer up. Thanks for any help.

How old were your tires? What brand?

I'm not sure of what you're looking for... Not the wheel well, is it the little aluminum trim piece? Any pictures?

I believe the item that is being requested is a device that bolts to the bottom of the springs/axle to allow the trailer to slide along the pavement long enough to get it safely stopped. Years ago they were sold under many different names. There purpose is to limit the amount of drop in case of a total tire failure/wheel seperation and to prevent excessive damage that can occur if under carriage were to catch in the pavement. I have not seen them advertised for a long time. Many people used to swear by them and would not tow without them.

This is why the very first thing I do before I pick up a trailer is grease the bearings and put new tires on the trailer. Going to have to do it anyhow so may as well get it over with. I know the barn door is already open but just thought I would say it again.
Towing is a dangerous thing and you are not the only one who could be affected by a catastrophic failure such as a blow out or worse yet, and this happened to the 59 I'm working on, you lose a spring, followed by the loss of the entire axle. That also just happened to a friend of mine on the way back from a rally and that was a big trailer of I believe 24 feet. This is not a good thing to do.
So before moving ANY trailer, make sure the tires are not over 5 years old, has good safety chains and the wheels are not wobbling all over the place.
