Has anyone found a site that has these available? They are like GOLD. Those of us living remotely that don't have salvage yards to access are really stuck with what to do. I'd like to build one from scratch and heard that a piano hinge is a good place to start. My 62 oasis has a front window that is a massive 67" wide and 26" tall...I sure don't want that baby to get chipped. Has anyone built their own and could share photos or drawings of details and materials, etc? I understand I can add mud flaps to my vehicle, but that doesn't prevent errant rocks from other guys hitting me. I'd like to use it as shade, too, so top hinged is preferred so it's an awning, too (vs. a net under the tongue like the Aussies do). Any thoughts? Examples? Other ideas? Thanks!

Mobiltec built one for the '57 Shasta, shown in the video series: Schweetcruisers built one also, although I am not sure how well detailed his blog is about the build: schweetcruisers.blogspot.com/2013/03/rocking-rock-guard.htmlI have a couple of them lying around. I may put one on the Deluxe, not sure how that project is going to develop yet. I don't know measurements right off, but can check. i do know that shipping something that size is a real bear. Cost is liable to be over $100.

I just had to click the like on this thread. The camper I`m rebuilding does not have a rock guard/awning for it. I have been rolling the thoughts about a rock going through a glass and I am not liking that thought. Better thoughts are in "PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE" and doing something about it before it can happen. LOL
I think if a person found an old pickup topper and took the back hatch from that, it would be a good start. at least a person would have the two strut/supports and a nice hinge along with a turn latch handle or two.

Coffee cup was in hand but, I had not yet taken a swallow, if I had, there`d be a mess to clean up and coffee would have been running out of my nose. LOL A person could also use a couple of those gas filled strut rods. the only problem with those is, someties they dont work so good when it gets cold. Another source for strut supports would be from an old pickup box tool box. I dont know if they would be long enough and the window guard might not full open or, if set up the other way, fully close.

Thanks for the question. I'll be looking at this. I too am just starting a 62 (TravelEZE) and the front window is big. Trailer is an inch under 8'wide and window is most of it. And no guard. Since I've just decided to replace the top skin, I've been thinking of making one with a scrap of the old, and some alu angle or square tubing...easy to get. And there are arm supports available on several rv supply sites. The window on my Dodge pick up just got smacked bad the other day, so could be a good thing to figure out.

Okay, now You went and did it. You got Me to thinking. LOL With 2 short pieces of angle steel, a person could make the pivots and drill holes in it to mount one to the camper and one to the awning. Another hole for the pivot on the other side of the angles. Two appropiete lengthed pieces of flat, holes in both ends of each piece for pivots and a fabricated box steel that would slide over the flats when they are unfolded and the awning is up, so that the flats can not pivot until the box around the flats is slid towards the top. There too are bolts available that has a shoulder of about any thickness, the thickness of the shoulder would need to be equivelant to what thickness of steel is used and the thickness of the pivot angle steel. it would take three bolts to a side and also nylok nuts so that the nuts could not back off from the action of the pivot. Probably be best to double the amount so there`d be one on each sde of the camper and awning. Oh yeah, dont forget the piano hinge, available from about any lumber or hardware store. I can see it in Mine head, I just cant seem to explain it in words. LOL

One idea a was fabric one and I have an awning rail over front window. Not sure how it would do at 65 though. Well, I tried the paint program, I`m not very skilled in these things but I did manage to draw a pic. of a bar with the holes in the ends. It will be easier, after I get the insulation installed in the camper, to just fabricate the components and takeum pics. ofum and postum up in this thread. LOL, I shall do that next week sometime, but first, I will determine what lengths I will need the flat bars to be. No sense in building something that I can not use. That cover is most beautimus. That puts a whole new perspective in creativness when it comes to making and fabbing components. Thank you mobiltec for posting that.

Ha - love the chatter and ideas. Confess that some of that chat is hard to picture in my peanut, so agreed, a hand written sketch with a few specs, scanned, and put on this thread would really rock!
