Puzzled as to why there is a gap at the back of my stovetop, with a weird piece of board/laminate? The color matches (yellow) but there's nothing else like that in the camper. Thoughts? DSCN0757 by Corvett crzy, on Flickr

The gap is probably for air flow. The "board" could be asbestos for insulation from oven heat. Actually, if it's all working, don't disturb it and no problems...

Ah I've been meaning to ask that question as well! I thought it was wasted space and I could eventually convert it to a storage cubby, but it's good to know it has a purpose! The laminate in the back could just be to manage stains. That area was so greasy for me that the stains were still coming through after 5 coats of primer. I gave up and painted it a dark color. Here's mine before the paint:

Hhmmm, the idea of wasted space makes me crazy, how greasy does it get? I was thinking what I could store there. Not too much of course to keep air circulating, that just seems like a lot of air. wondering if the campers with ovens have the same space or if it's possible that the ovens are that much deeper and rather than building 2 cabinets they just left the gap in the stove tops - just thinking aloud.
If you look at my stovetop you see that the center burner is disconnected. I can't figure out how to connect it back on? Do you just "push" it over the nut?

Corvett my trailer has the space behind the stove/oven also and it's important for airflow so the burner stays lit. But mine has a top piece that leans back to hide the gap: IMG_20160501_0905030_rewindI've seen other trailers with a filler piece behind the stove to hide it, I wouldn't use any of the area behind there for any kind of storage. The small skinny stuff you could fit there just wouldn't be worth the problems it might cause.

It might take a little sanding inside of the receiver in the end of the burner to relieve it of rust, possibly over the end of the valve too, so that it might slide on a little easier.

I haven't used my stovetop yet, so it's possible that the PO spilled something, but this was after one coat of primer. I forgot to take more photos but it looked about the same after 5 coats. I, too, hate the idea of wasted space. So if you experiment with using this let me know

Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas, and the tips on the burner! I think I'm going to put some floor tile pieces back there to replace the loose piece of whatever it is. I think the tile would be easier to clean. Love that stove Margaret!! At first I was disappointed that I didn't have a princess stove, but I guess, no stove, less cooking!! Although I used to be able to make a pretty good apple pie in my modern camper stove - with a 12 inch ceramic tile inside of course to make more even baking.

It looks much different now, it's mint green instead of yellow and has been torn 100% apart, each piece cleaned, painted, shined, greased, whatever they needed and put back together. It was a lot of work, but I love the outcome. I never thought of putting ceramic tile in to help with evening the heat out, thanks for that too. I'll probably do it.

Yep, I've looked at your stove pics and your suggestions and comments about powder coat and porcelain. I'll be getting estimates soon. I'm interested in the "chrome look" powder coat, thinking that may work on some exterior chrome light bezels, rather than expensive chrome plating. Put a 12" ceramic tile right above the burner. In the newer oven there's a piece of sheet metal directly above the burner, that's where I put mine. Never need to take it out. It displaces the heat so that the center of everything you cook doesn't burn, and keeps it a more consistent temperature. Worked well for me. You have to use it like that a few times to get a feel for how it will affect your cooking times, etc.

DSCN0757 by Corvett crzy, on Flickr Drop those burners in a Flogers coffee jug filled with vinegar, or whatever container You have that the burners will fit into. You might have to eat a gallon of ice cream to get a nice little bucket. LOL. the rust will be gone and the aluminum will look nicer too. Rinse with water and dry as quickly as possible or they will again rust. surface rust, not the deeply embedded rust.

I did do a couple of lights and the door handle in it also and they came out looking just as good.
