The problem is the cooling unit. If it fails, it has to be replaced or rebuilt. They can't be "charged" like a regular fridge. Unfortunately, I've yet to find a company that will rebuild the old ones. If you want to keep the old fridge body, it's possible to put new (electric only) "guts" in it. Or, use the original door as a cabinet cover for a hidden dorm fridge...

I gutted out my Astral propane-only fridge, put a bulkhead drain in the bottom, and plan to use it like an icebox in its original space. I have a strong feeling that it won't be the most efficient setup... But it is "original", if you stretch the definition just a bit.

How can I tell if mine is a propane only or a 3 way fridge?? airflyte6 by Mel L, on Flickr

Mine says it on top but u should also have controls inside below the doors if it's both so u can change settings

What year is it? Probably the same as mine, propane only. The easiest way is to pull the control cover off, below the door. It would have two separate sets of controls. If there is only the propane ignition button and the temp control, it would only have a propane burner.

1964 I just went out and looked at it and it appears to be propane only. It just has a temp knob and the ignition button. I am going to assume it doesn't work. But I wont be testing it out for while.
