I can find some stamping, but no ball size. The trailer came with a 1-7/8" ball, but the PO was a bit of a hoarder, so I'm not sure it went with that trailer. My first tow banged a bit, but that could have been the receiver.

Try a two inch ball in the coupler. It won't close if it is 1 7/8"....

The 1-7/8" is a bit loose. goo.gl/photos/aaBQg3AXqsLTq9Rf9The 2" ball seems to fit. Should it be totally tight? If so, thanks PO for nearly killing me again

Dan, Did you ever try this method? We were told ours was 2in, but it seems loose.

The ball should not be totally tight. If it were it would score the chrome on the ball. If the hitch is for a 1-7/8ths inch ball, a two inch would not even fit into the hitch, unless it was totally hammered out. If that was the case You would be able to see the damage. if that video is of Your hitch, You are good to go with the 2" ball. The adjustment procedures described in the adjustment page is good information. The hitch could possibly be adjusted until it is too tight then, it would be tough to get the latch shoved down. I also use a very sparingly amount of grease on the ball to prevent squeaking and galling of the chrome. A lot of controversy on that subject too. LOL I keep a plastic shopping bag, with a paper bag inside of it to store the receiver and ball in when not in use. Like I said, very sparingly on the grease on the ball. After the first tow of the greased ball and I disconnect from the hitch, i wipe down the ball so it is clean. there will then be enough grease inside of the hitch to last for many a mile. The ball may have to be wiped off again, after each pull and after several more pulls.

Dan, Did you ever try this method? We were told ours was 2in, but it seems loose. Turns out my coupler is a different style than the one from the article. It has a pin that moves up and down, pushing a sliding piece forward to capture the ball. I finally got a 2" ball and it seems to fit OK.

Thanks for the response! My coupler is like yours. I'll be trying the 2-5/16 ball this weekend.

Thanks for the response! My coupler is like yours. I'll be trying the 2-5/16 ball this weekend. There might be an adjustment screw/bolt inside there, but I couldn't see how to turn it. The 2" ball fit, so I stopped trying to fix it. Does yours have a model name and number stamped on top?

It probably does, but it's painted over and I gave up looking for the VIN after much scrubbing with a wire brush. I'll be getting one that attaches to my drill. I'll look for the model number then.

Frolicking, I highly doubt your trailer needs a 2 5/16 ball. They weren't used much way back when. Also, I always use a 1" shanked ball. Most class III ball mounts today require one anyway.
