Okay, we are stumped and that is not surprising since we are still new at this whole "vintage trailer thing".....but what is this used for on the tongue of our trailer? There is one on both sides.....our trailer is approx 17 feet (without tongue) and is a Bell trailer circa pre-1968....thinking 1966 or 1967.

Hubby thinks he found out what it is...part of a load leveling, anti sway bar package ?? That looks to Me like the trailer end of an "Equalizer Hitch". There was a mounting device on the vehicles trailer hitch that had two bars, one for each side, that went between the tow nit and the trailer. An old time here drove a new Oldsmobile Tornado. He would hook to His trailer then jack up the back end of the car He would then attach the equalizer bars between the car and the camper, let the jack down and His hind tires would be just barely touching the ground. LOL He said it sure makes a nice ride with that loooong wheel base. LOL Of course LP was a different kind of a man. Made good in the early years of the oil industry working heavy equipment. He has since passed on but there is still a store in Billings that He started. L.P. Anderson Construction and tires. Ine time, he was building an underground house across the river. The power company would not boat the cable across the river because there was ice flowing. LP stripped down to His undershorts, grabbed the end of the rope, tied it around His waist and took off a swimming across the river, he got the rope across but after He got out of the water exclaimed, "I sure wish I would not have been such a smart, uhhhhh, well You know, and made that swim. LOL

Both are correct. Those are the Sway Control Brackets for The Original Equal-I-Zer Sway Control Hitch....1st generation of the 6K model. I know this because I have the complete package for our Shasta. It makes a BIG difference when towing.

If the trailer is setting over the ball of the tow unit, trailer lowered to just above the ball and the equalizer bars are then hooked between the tow unit and the trailer, then the trailer lowered onto the ball, it will take a LOT of load off of the tow vehicle and apply it towards the trailers axle/axels. When towing a trailer with something like a passenger car, it is like adding helper springs to the tow vehicle so that it does not overload the tow units springs and suspension.

Also, the trailer can be hooked to the tow vehicles ball, then the back end of the two vehicle jacked up then hook the equalizes bars between the vehicle and the trailer then lower the tow vehicle back down. How much load the trailer will have on it depends on how high the tow vehicle is raised up, or how high the trailers tongue is above the ball before hooking the equilizers bars between the two units. If the tow vehicle is raised high enough, or the trailer is high enough before hooking the bars between them, the hind tires of the tow vehicle might not even touch the ground. It requires a bit of practice and adjusting to get it set just right. I am sure the instructions that comes with the equalizer hitch gets it pretty close. This is a very good alternative to adding helper springs to a vehicle to be able to handle the load.

We are trying to determine the age of our Bell Trailer and it is like putting all the puzzle pieces together since we can't find any serial number, no title, etc. Bell started production in 1961 but not this bigger model...I see old archived newspapers with their sales flyer and we think she is a 65 possibly based on the flyer, appliances, wood interior and no clearance lights on top of the coach. Our warranty card printing date is 63 but we are guessing that the cards could have been printed prior to the manufacture of our unit........I love trying to solve puzzles.......

We tow our 17' Starflyte with our 2005 Toyota 4 Runner. Without the Equal-I-Zer hitch, it was towing a brick house that loved to sway, as bigger vehicles would pass us.
It took about an hour to get the hitch and trailer set up correctly, as per the instructions. Before getting it set up, the 4 Runner and Shasta were loaded as if we were on our way for one of our typical camping trips. Once I installed and adjusted the hitch, the 4 Runner and Shasta were all leveled out and even with each other. It was a night and day difference. Well worth the time and money spent.
A bit of history about the Equal-i-zer brand.
The hitch has been around since the 60's, when it was know as The Equal-i-zer Sales Corp....which was a division of Mobile Manufacturing. In 1984, the company changed names to Lindon Hitch, Inc and in 2004 is when the company changed names again to Progress Mfg, Inc., which better represents the value and continuing improvements to their product line.
As for the first generation of the Equal-i-zer hitch, we have the first gen version, under Progress Mfg, Inc., in 2004.
If you have an older Equal-i-zer hitch and need replacement parts, you won't find them in their online catalog. You will need to talk with Joey King at equalizerhitch.com and he can get you back up and running. He was big help!

I have seen one ton duallys with a big camper loaded on the back and pulling huge a camper trailer. They too sure could have profited from having an equal I Zer hitch. LOL
