Hi Friends, Anyone been able to mount Dexter Never Adjust brake assemblies on any axles from the 50's vintage trailers like the link below? www.etrailer.com/p-23-469.htmlI am wondering if they will fit on our older axles. Or are we stuck with just the conventional brake assemblies? www.etrailer.com/p-23-26.htmlThanks, Rod

I am thinking of replacing my Hadco 'disc' brakes on my '56 Shasta with the 12" Dexter self adjusts in the next few weeks. The Hadcos worked great, apply those babies and the whole rig would squat right down, but they finally gave up the ghost. I believe they will fit, my concern is, are they going to be as good. Will keep you posted on the outcome.

My Hadco brakes are DOA. I am also interested. What I can't figure out, if the distance from new backing plate to new drum will fit, Hadco drum is wider. Axle may be too long. Good luck, I will look forward to your install.

Sounds like we're all waiting for someone else to be the lab rat and try these brakes out. Come on someone, tell us how they work 😁

I have another year of work on mine before thinking of brakes. Plus, I would need new backing plates, drums, and wheels, because my wheels are 4 bolt, and the new brakes are 5 bolt drums. lottsa $$.

Wow, so you can't use these 4 bolt brakes? Is that because of the distance between the bolts being 2 7/8"?

The ones that Rod linked to are 4 bolt pattern. There's a few videos near the bottom of the page and one of them is a review and shows the bolt pattern on the back of the brake. This is the one that Rod linked: www.etrailer.com/p-23-469.htmlI searched for lo-liners and the information I found says they weigh about 1300 lbs, so these 3500 lbs rated breaks should work on a trailer that size right? I'm hoping so cause I was planning on getting these also.

Oh, never mind, Sam explained that it's your wheels that have 4 bolt pattern and your right they don't have a hub and drum assembly with just four bolts sorry I'm learning.

Trailer brakes are available in both four a five bolt wheel patterns. They may not be in stock but should be able to be ordered. When buying brakes you have to make sure that the lugs match the holes in your wheels plus they also have to fit inside your wheels. Most 10 " brakes will clear the vast majority of trailer wheels but be certain before you install. Self adjusting brakes only adjust when applied while backing up so if they work on a trailer depends on how much you back up. Most trailer axles that came with brakes have a standard flange for bolting your brakes on but before I bought new brakes I would measure the flange bolt pattern and compare it to what you wish to buy. As no one wants to pay return shipping and or restocking fees. Most four lug brakes are four 2000 pound axles.

Hi bigbill, I am looking for brake backing plate/drum with self adjusters that fit my 4 bolt pattern wheel. Let me know where I can find them. I don't see them at etrailer. Thank you, Roger

Are you asking for 2000 pound parts as 3500 pound hubs are five lug or more. I personally don't like self adjusters on a trailer as most people don't back up enough to make them work and if a cable breaks it can cause major problems. I would go to manufacture's web pages to check on availability. I have seem many twenty year old trailers with very little shoe wear especially light trailers.

Hi bigbill. I read your response on self adjust brakes. I think you are thinking old school self adjusters on cars, where you had to back up to make them adjust. from etrailer "If you let the brakes alone they will eventually adjust themselves so that all of the brake assemblies are operating the same. The self adjusting brakes adjust themselves each time you apply the brakes and keep the brakes adjusted for maximum braking performance". My experience is the same on my Airstream Argosy, they were continually adjusted, the best brakes I have ever had, on 8 or 10 trailers I have owned.

My brakes are 10 inch Hadco, and the brake coils are toast. But, I have 13" wheels with 4 bolts. Would like to retain the 10 inch drums, but Hadco is a weird setup, and no replacement parts on their website.

Hey Roger, I've been doing a lot of searching and then I called my helpful friend from Henderson Wheel and Tire where we are getting our axle parts. She confirmed what I found, the only axle with four bolts like your wanting so you can use your wheels are 2000 lbs or lower. So you're either going to have to replace the wheels with 5 bolt, or change out axle and everything.
There are 3500 lbs 5 bolt drums that are 10" if that makes you feel any better 😔
