Sam and I have decided that the interior side and top panel of the oven are in need of being redone. There are just too many places where the enamel has come off and those areas are starting to rust. We've put so much into the stove already we want to have it finished completely.
I'm trying to decide if we should have the parts powder coated or send them somewhere to have the enamel replaced. I'm worried about the shipping costs to send them to somewhere that does enameling. But also don't know if the place that did our powder coating would have the special powder needed for high heat and if they do is it available in the look the oven is. It's going to cost at least twice as much for enamel as it would to powder coat and I have no idea how much the shipping will be be.
My question is to those who have sent this kind of stuff out what kind of shipping did you use, how much did it cost and did you pack it or have one of those shipping places pack it. I guess I'd also like to know if this was your stove and you'd put as much into it as we have so far which way would you go, powder coating or enamel? Also, would you send it to a place that just does the enamel or include the manifolds and grates and send it to a antique appliance restoration place and have everything fixed by a professional?

I'd be interested in the answers myself. Hopefully somebody will suggest a reliable option.

If you send it to an antique restoration place to be completely restored, you may find you have more money invested in your stove than you have in your trailer. Do a bit of sleuthing for a local powder coating business that can provide references with examples of similar work they have done and discuss what kinds of coating they would recommend. If they are good at their craft, they will know what the industry standard is for coating oven/stove parts. They may have ideas that will allow two toning options if that is a look you are interested in. If they can not suggest a coating with specs you understand, move on to one who can. Good luck.

www.ipe-porcelain.com/page2.htmlI've heard of these guys (link above) from others on this forum. Not too expensive. Just unbolt the panels from your stove… about 4 in most cases… flat pack and ship… and your stove will look like new.

Thank you. I was hoping for someone closer (I'm in Idaho) but it doesn't look like that will happen. I was kinda leaning towards them to.

I had my stove done by independence porcelain. $99. 00 for the top and the same for the front. The shipping was very reasonable. I can't remember the amount but I had it shipped to Texas and it was not too much.

Cause this place give a address in Independence, Missouri, just a few states away.

I did not send it to Texas. I had it shipped to Texas when finished. I shipped it to Indipendence from North Dakota. I am a Canadian and drove it to the border to ship it. Shipped via USPS. It was in a big box and I paid $15.00 with tracking. Then when they finished it, I had them ship it to my mom's winter home in Texas. Being a Canadian the shipping to Canada and duty etc. would have been really high. So I had my mom bring it home from Texas in the spring.
The quality of the work this company does is outstanding. I love the results.

DUH, I knew you lived in Canada, don't know why that didn't click with my brain about the duty and taxes. GAH, I'm really out of it this week.
I think I'm going to check out what they would charge for my three panels and three burner grates. Thanks for the referral and $15 is a lot less than I thought it would be.

Here is a photo of mine that they did... Although the photo doesn't do them justice. They are brighter red than they look there. A true fire engine red.

I have contacted Gigi's Appliances in California. They have given me a great quote for all the exterior panels of my 50's Dixie stove. They take the panel down to the metal and them apply and cook the porcelain. I have a quote from IPE as well and there cost was $300+ more than Gigi's. I hope this helps. She has web site as well as a phone number. There valve rebuilds are very reasonable as well.

Why so much from independence porcelain? Stove tops and fronts are $99 each. Are you having something else done?
