I thought I'd share this as I haven't seen anyone mention it. And, no I'm not a glamper, I just want everything in Lil Bit to be period correct (really, truly). I've been trying to find a new radio that looked vintage for the trailer, and the only stuff I can find that is still being made are ones that look like 30's or 40's not 50's or 60's. So I got to wondering if it was possible to modify an old radio to play mp3's and stuff from my kindle or phone. I did a search and actually found an article with instructions written for the common person, not someone with an electrical engineer background. Here's the article: www.artofmanliness.com/2011/09/19/how-to-make-an-old-time-radio-into-an-mp3-player-speaker/I bought this radio off eBay because it's hard for me to get out and about (dang meds anyhow, can't do crap on them and can't survive without): Bought the needed amplifier and audio cable from here: thingylab.com/shop/amplifier/stereo-audio-amp/I plan on spray painting the radio case close to the same color so it looks better. I'll keep everything hooked up inside because other than the clock it works great. And VOILA an old radio that will play any music etc that I want. I did toy around briefly with the idea of getting the Bluetooth amplifier, but my son pointed out all the trouble we have been having with Bluetooth stuff lately (it isn't fun to discover your daughter watches pornography when it suddenly appears on your t.v. because she paired he Bluetooth up with the wrong device. I could have gone forever not knowing that).. So, yeah, let Bluetooth get a little more advanced and then maybe revisit the idea. I hope it all turns out like theirs did and works just fine. I'll let you know when everything has arrived and is installed and ready to go.

My son and I are going to do this together I think, since he is kinda horning in on the project. But I love that radio, it's really unique and cool looking. I really thought this was a good way of adding music to vintage trailers, I'm not into the built-in systems, that was more seventies than fifties.

I had a vintage Airstream in Valdez with an eight track system built in to the cabinetry above the living room sofa-bed.

We did this remake with an old 1941 Zenith radio. It has great wood, but only played a couple of AM stations, so we gutted it , gave the guts to some radio nuts and made the changes. It has a Bose wireless speaker and we play tunes from either our I-pod , or listen to Pandora through the I-phone.

My son thinks we should gut it also, but it works perfect expect for the clock I was going to look closer at and see if I could replace or get working. The amplifier is really tiny and would fit just fine mounted to the inside wall, and I actually want the old speaker sound. It will make it more realistic to the times, if I want clearer sound I can always hook up speakers to my kindle

In the mid 80s my parents bought a house from a lady that left many treasures behind. I came across this radio cleaning out the basement. It didn't work, so none of my brothers wanted it. I'm a tinkerer. It was filthy but I cleaned up nice. My Dad thought it was cool I took an interest in something so old. I never got it working, but a few years ago I took it to the old guy in town to see what he could do. He loved it! He got it working and confirmed the plug on the back was a mono phono input plug. It's a 1953 Crosley AM radio. I set my iPod to mono and plug it in at rallys and then hide the iPod behind it. Sounds cool rocking some Motown. Everybody always asks what station it is!

You guys rock! "Bakelite" was the first widely used plastic, most of these old radios were made with it. thinglab looks like a good way to go.

Oh, I love these! Not a glamper either but I would like a nice radio for the Shasta. Mine has one built in but I have no idea yet if it works.

I can't wait to get feeling decent so I can dive into this. I was pleasantly surprised to have the parts arrive yesterday when the order had only been placed on Saturday.
I love your radio too, it's beautiful, I hope mine turns out half as nice.

Please forgive me, but I just need to rant and get this off my chest then maybe I'll feel better. My son in law was here when the transformer came so I could get my radio to play from my mp3 player or phone or whatever and begged me to let him do the work for me. I don't know if I gave in because I was also really sick at the time, or if I just got tired of listening to him, but give in I did. I got the radio back today and just want to cry. I asked for two things definitely and one possibility. I wanted the transformer installed and working and I wanted it repainted to as close to it's original color as possible. If he could find tin to replace the stuff that went around the clock and dial faces that would be great also. He called me late that same night and said the transformer was in and working great. Never heard anything else. I finally got my daughter to bring it back today and the first thing that I noticed (can't miss it in fact) is the horrible paint job. It's like he half as*** taping off the stuff I didn't want painted and then didn't bother to clean off the dirt and dust because the paint has gunk in it. If that isn't bad enough, it isn't even CLOSE to the right color. It's an ugly green somewhere between army and forest green. The freaking thing was TEAL!!!!!! How can you mix those colors up? ?. The next bit of news is that he broke BOTH FREAKING KNOBS when he was dismantling the radio. I have a stump of one left, but the other wouldn't even go back on. So I'm scouring the internet hoping I can find something that will work to replace them. And if all this wasn't bad enough, the dang thing doesn't even work. No matter what we hook up it doesn't come through the speaker like it's supposed to. I even gave him the instructions WITH PICTURES, and he couldn't do that right. I guess I know why he's been avoiding me lately. My daughter told him home upset I am and when he came to get the grandbaby he didn't say a word to me or anything. This is a perfect example of why I don't trust him. He is just too immature and thinks he knows everything. I bet he didn't even look at the instructions once. Oh, well, a little more work to get it right, but my son and I will work on it together like we were going to. When it gets done I'll post pics and/or a video of it. Thanks for letting me rant.

If it's important to me, I always do it myself. Heck, I'm cheap...I always do it myself period. Sorry about your radio... Hate to see an old piece get abused.

Yeah, me too. So sorry...
Do it yourself. That way you've only yourself to blame is things go south.

Thanks for the link to the instructions to transform my old radio.. I'm saving it for a winter project. Very exciting. But I'm so sorry to hear what happened to yours. So maddening.
