Well, after all my bragging about how uncomplicated getting CA PTI was, today I received my waiver letter returned with a "Not eligible for PTI" note and request for full registration. Sigh...At least I have a certification of the VIN and length, so it should not require another tow to the DMV to correct. Hopefully can be done over the phone? The DMV no longer answers phones as far as I know. Did they tell you WHY your trailer is not eligible?

We submitted the sheet with all the dimensions signed by the clerk.

If your trailer is 15 feet it is not considered habitable so it is NOT a CCH designation. That's in THEIR literature and the law. Is your trailer 15 feet or under in length? I've had to demand that the manager come out before. Again it's a good thing to print out the law right from their website and take it with you. Show that to the manager and you will be granted a PTI.

We only submitted to Sacramento to keep the old plates and some faceless bureaucrat has now added hours to the process for us.

Well it does take some time if you are wanting to keep the original plates. They get sent to SAC and sit in a pile for a few months and then someone sends it back to you.... In the meantime you should have a temporary that you put in the back window.

Dan, Maybe it was returned because you wanted to put the PTI sticker on the original plate. When I got my Westerner PTI'd, I didn't have an original plate. They gave me one of those new plain boring old blue-on-reflective white plates. On a good note, I have PTI, now. I was at AAA, though. I called DMV a few months ago and sat on hold for a few minutes and then was asked if I wanted a call back by the automated voice. So, I did that and someone called me aback after 5 p.m. believe it or not. That was about 3 hours later. I called a few weeks ago and I was on hold for ever and then gave up. Maybe the outgoing call back option only kicks in when there is a ton of people calling. If you happen to call and there is only a half ton of people calling, then you are on hold for eons? Cheers, Rod

It was returned from Sacramento labeled "not eligible" That I do not understand.... Tell me about it. The reason is "Z 4" which is basically unpaid registration...but it's only unpaid because they rejected the PTI. Unclear how to proceed as there is no method to appeal Sacramento decisions.

Unclear how to proceed as there is no method to appeal Sacramento decisions. I've registered my trailers and kept the plates by going there and doing it myself before. Of course I had to have the manager come out and show her the print outs to get my way. I've also found that it's easier and usually faster to go through a private party and pay a little extra. But it saved me a lot of standing around in lines time. Did you know that you can now buy nostalgic plates from the state? If your trailer is pre-1961 you should get a Black On Yellow plate which is what they had before 1961. So if your trailer is pre-1961, the yellow on black is not era correct anyhow. Maybe you should look into that Dan....

Fact is, we only kept the plates on a whim...they are pretty rusty and busted looking and we're not really married to them, but now we're in it for the long haul. I have a call into the direct Sacramento DMV registration office and am expecting a return call within the hour.

Still it all sounds pretty weird to me but then again it's a government agency so who the heck knows?

They could not tell me why my application was rejected either and thought it was fine based on me reading the verification data back to them. They suggested I have the original clerk write up a "statement of facts" stating that her original verification was correct and resubmit...with the verification that she was stating the facts about and that had already been rejected for reasons unknown to everyone involved...duh. At least sloths are cute...DMV employees are incompetent, unaccountable and ignorant of their own rules. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oMbwWqceNw

When I picked up the Lakewood in Bishop, CA., The lady told me "You can't have an "in-state" one trip permit. You MUST register this trailer..." That wold have meant a lot of work with no tools 300 miles from home.
Well I couldn't do that because it needed work to get it inspectable. This was a "salvage" trailer that had been legally junked. Just never taken to the junk yard. That's the other way to get out of fees. Junk it. But you can't register it again without going through both the brake and lamp inspection AND The dmv inspection.
So I leave thinking I was beat. Then I decided to go back and plead one more time. The lady I spoke to left on vacation and another one took her place. I told her the story and she said "What? What do you mean you can't get an in-state one trip permit. Of course you can. Why was she putting you through all this hassle?"
So she wrote me up a one trip permit, took $10 from me and and I towed the trailer home where I got the brakes working, the lamps working and got both inspections. And when I went to for the DMV inspection the lady asked me how long it was. I said I didn't know. (I knew it was 17 feet total with a 15 foot box but played dumb to see what she would do.) So she get's out her trusty tape measure, ask's me to hold one end of it which I did.... then she measures the BOX only... It was 15 feet. She said, "Congratulations! You qualify for a PTI!"... I thanked her, got my PTI plate and went happily on my way....
