I went to the DMV today, to have my 1968 Aristocrat placed on to PTI. They told me I could get the PTI, but could not retain my original yellow letters on black license, unless they sent it to Sacramento to get permission to do so.WHAT GIVES?? Anybody know the DMV statute that will allow me to PTI with my original plate? Thanks in advance. Roger

What I want to do is keep my license plate which is yellow letters on black. The DMV says a new plate needs to be issued, otherwise they need to send the PTI application to sacramento for approval. Anyone have this experience? DMV statutes on PTI?? Roger

They no longer can authorize keeping your old plates at the local office. Our DMV clerk helped us file the letter to Sacramento, gave us a PTI sticker she found in her drawer, and charged us $20 for the PTI and $20 for a copy of the new title (PTI doesn't have a title, but I don't trust them enough to give up my title.)

I gave up. I will be selling the trailer soon, so it is not worth the hassle to me.

No, I am giving up on DMV, and I will have the trailer finished in 2017, and will sell it. Time for a new hobby. Giving up the camping,

Whoa... Giving up the hobby because of the DMV? Kind of a drastic reaction...
The person you talked to at the DMV did not know what they are talking about. DMV people in CA only get two weeks training before they are put out on the windows to "help" people... So they know next to nothing. If it is in any way out of the ordinary they are lost.
What you need to do is your homework on the DMV website. All the policies and laws are there. You need to submit a "statement of facts" to them telling them that you wish to keep the old original plate for nostalgic and monetary value. Then they can issue you a PTI sticker for your plate. I have done this a few times...
The easiest way to do this is to go to AAA if you are a member or go to a private DMV processing place and tell them what you want to do. Yes you will give them the plate and it may get sent around a bit and it may take a month or two, or maybe it will get done right there... I've had it happen right there at their office and I've had to let them send it to Sacramento for permission. That's when you need the statement of facts.. But it can be done.

I lucked into a helpful long term employee who was around when PTI was introduced. We even joked about how little training the other employees had as literally no one else, including the manager had ever done a PTI.

What I do is go to the DMV website, find the page that deals with what ever type of registration I'm doing, print it out and bring it with me because the employees are too dumb or lazy to look it up on their own. With that print out in hand there is nothing they can do but take care of you.

Didn't mean to make you think I am giving up because of the DMV. My trailer has the original black plates, and I wanted to keep them but put the trailer on PTI. It is not worth the hassle of DMV lines again. I will sell the trailer and get out of camping because of other travel interests, not because of the DMV.

The DMV said they can retain the black plates and put it on PTI but they need to send it to Sacramento. I don't think it is worth the hassle for me, but if I were keeping the trailer maybe it would. My fees right now are only $100/year.

Well, after all my bragging about how uncomplicated getting CA PTI was, today I received my waiver letter returned with a "Not eligible for PTI" note and request for full registration. Sigh...At least I have a certification of the VIN and length, so it should not require another tow to the DMV to correct. Hopefully can be done over the phone?
