My trailer was put together with 1-1/2, 2" and 2-1/2" screws. In most of my DIY projects, I just use "gold screws" in the box from Home Depot. Is there a different type that makes more sense? Was considering 2-1/2" deck screws for attaching the walls, but maybe just revert to the cheap ones for the cabinetry.

I know that many trailers had 1/4 inch hex head, one inch long screws on the outside (windows, j-rail etc)

Kreg screws for everything except walls to floor, then use yellow(gold) exterior 'deck screws' as they will resist rusting for awhile longer than other types. Length of screws should not exceed 75% of the thickness of the combined materials... you don't want to break through into the living space. I use the Kregs and glue for 1X joints.

Where do you buy "kreg screws"? Are they called that as a brand?

I used the coated deckmate screws for wall to floor and cabinet to wall. They are beefy screws compared to the gold ones. Kreg screws for all framing joints.

My biggest problem with Chinese made crap these days is the fact that you can not find phillips head screw bits that fit the phillips head screws that they also make. Why is that? Most of the little owies that I get are when the screw gun slips out of the head of the screw and lands on my finger. It can also put a hole in your metal when it happens. WHY can't they make a screw and screw bit that fit together? If I were king I would not allow ANYTHING to be imported from China....

I couldn't pass up a $3 sale price driver bit set. First screw I tried to set and the Philips bit teeth broke like it was made of hard candy. I usually just get bits at my local lumberyard where you can fish them out of the buckets and test them with whatever screws you are using. The deck screws I got came with a star driver bit (though about 1/10 of the chinese screws have too much yellow paint in the "star" to get good purchase). The Kreg screws I've been mostly using now I get from Amazon for $4/100 and the square drive on them seems to work 100% of the time. It's worth it for me to pay more for the Kreg screws and not to have to worry about stripping them as I did nearly every Philips I removed from the trailer.

Deck screws are great but yes,,,, they changed from a square head that worked PERFECT to that star crap and yes, they have too much paint in them and many won't work. They only did that so they could sell a crap load of those star bits and make more money on everyone who was using deck screws by selling them the new bits also. I HATE THE CORPORATIONS and I HATE THE CHINESE MANUFACTURERS... If I were king I would turn China into glass along with the middle east.
