This is is what the roof looks like. It does not appear to be leaking at all and has been raining here for about 24hrs (it had been tarped just in case since I got it two months ago). I would like to clean it up and maybe paint it white (?) The roof is going to have to be removed to replace two birch ceiling panels inside - is this going to be super hard to do? (Scrapping is not an option. At all. Ever). Ive been reading about roofs on the forum. Looks a lot like the remains of the same silver crap that was all over my roof. Under the silver it's hard, like bondo. I took most of it off with one of those paint-stripping wheels for a drill, but it was really thick on my roof so it took a while to get down dangerously close to the aluminum. Like this: www.homedepot.com/p/Avanti-Pro-4-1-2-in-x-5-8-in-11-in-Non-Woven-Quick-Strip-Disc-PNW045STRB01G/202830907?keyword=paint+stripping+wheelIt doesn't look as thick on yours, like someone painted the whole roof with a thin layer. Mine had great gobs of it around every roof seam and vent, a good half-inch thick. It'd probably be safer for you to use a sander so you don't tear the aluminum. I don't know if there are any chemical strippers that will take it off.

If that is a steel roof and rusty areas, the roof should be replaced with aluminum roofing. It's not difficult and lasts a lot longer than trying to patch what you have. JMO.

It isn't leaking (and it's been pouring) and I'd really like to try to fix what I have before replacing.

Another question - why is the vent the same color if that's rust? Is the vent metal? I haven't touched the vent yet (I'm kind of nervous on the ladder) so I don't know what it's made of. The roof is definitely rustty.

It appears to be an aluminum skin. Easy to tell if it is a steel skin, see if a magnet will stick to it. If it does, ya got steel.
Our Starflyte looked similar to your roof skin. It took 00 steel wool and lacquer thinner and cleaned up what I could. Wasn't a tough job, just took time, working small areas at a time.

I didn't know any of them used steel roofs. Learn something new every day.
That rust looks like it has brush marks in it, though...

Steel wool and lacquer cuts it, but buy a good pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands and don't let the dissolved material run down the sides.

Quite a few trailers had steel roofs. They are infamous for rusting thru and pinholes. My 69 Scamper had a steel roof and it was a mess...

Did you try a magnet? It's normally pretty easy to tell aluminum from steel just by looking and touching it...

Semi Truck repair places often have aluminum available at reasonable prices. It is usually 105" wide (plenty for a trailer and whatever length you want. I'm not familiar with the cost, but it's less than RV places charge. A roof is around $400 which includes shipping. Depending where you are, you can pick it up yourself and save about 1/2.
Steel roofs are often too far gone to save and are hours of work finding that out. If there is another trailer addict in your area, it might be fun to have him/her take a look and give you another opinion.

How do you cut out the holes for the vent and other roof things?

MULTIMASTER: Clean cuts and accurate. The 1/2 round blade works best for me.
