I did a search for this but couldn't find anything - can the original gimp be reused? Will new gimp look the same/match up if not? 3/4 + of the interior birch of the trailer is in good condition I'd like to salvage as much as pussible. Thanks!

Gimp is sometimes used to refer to welting, or piping that is between two edges of boards like where the ceiling meets the wall. The original is usually a cording with with a cloth-like covering. The stuff you buy now is usually vinyl. You can make your own. If you search, you'll find several discussions. As far as using it, if it is in good condition, sure, use it. But if if it is crumbly, replace it. I used as much of my original as I could and some I shouldn't have. You will not be able to find an exact match, so if you want it all to be the same, replace it. VTS sells it and it is a little wider than my original but it doesn't look bad.

You can also find it on marine supply sites such as Sail rite. It comes in a lot of colors now.

If you can get the 5 million staples out without tearing it to shreds it absolutely can be reused. My Scotty's was painted when it was built, and since I'm redoing in golden birch I bought all new, but needed a bit and scraped paint off a 2' section of original and it was just fine.

Yes, that stuff is tough. LOL. I scraped the original welting in the Aljo and got it much whiter after the shellac flaked off. You can even add new to old; use a #10 solid electrical wire (white or). Insert the wire in the old. Slip the new up onto the wire and staple in place. Of course this is with the ceiling and roof OFF. Welting can not be added if the ceiling is in place. (or edge of cabinets-every trailer has welting in different places)

Thanks everyone. I watched some of Mobiltec's videos last night about gimp but I think I might need to be shown a little more in detail about how to put it on or how to clean it and reuse it:-/

Pretty much any good cleaner will work; it's a type of vinyl. When I mentioned scraping, there is often a thin layer of shellac coating the old welting. (they sprayed the entire interior back when, including the hinges and latches). So, if your is coated, you'll need to get the shellac off. Usually pretty clean under the coating. It's attached with staples on the top of the wall before ceiling panels: There's quite a few photos if you scroll back and forth. Enjoy.
