I bet some are laughing, but really.. is it a bad idea to use aluminum tape for the accent lightning stripe line? Wife and I have been trying to find something that will look decent but its not turning out great. We arent interested in doing the spraying through a gun. If the tape is a bad idea thats understandable but as far as painting that strip what is recommended? The rustoleum metallic sprays are much too runny. Either way I hope I gave someone a laugh!

I like the polished metal stripe. That's what I did on the last one.

If you're not out to win any shows it will work. But over time it will crack and become dull and then you are left with a larger problem. How to get that dang tape off... Polishing the bare metal and then painting both sides of it is a little tough to do from what I've seen. And you must use special masking tape so that paint doesn't soak under the edges. Some people outline the stripe at the paint lines with very skinny colored tape. Not sure what it's called. Detailing Tape? Pin Striping Tape? That's gonna come off eventually too I think. I have the stripe painted silver with a shade of metal flake stuff thrown in. It really looks good and it isn't going to come off or have to be polished any more than the rest of the trailer. The toughest paint job I have thrown at my painter was the 58 Deville. He did an excellent job... The one inch outlines around everything was done with that metal flaked silver. It changes colors depending on the sun angle...

Nccamper yoy have quite the detailed thread of how you did yours I am sure that had helped many! We were thinking about having the stripe be the metal itself. I love that idea. Also incidentally the green you used is not far from our color! Mobiltec the Deville looks awesome that is true talent there. Well I am so happy with how ours is coming. Well I will perhaps ask some of my automotive painter friends at the dealerships what they would recommend. Thanks guys.

Well not too bad for someone of my skill. For once it's not in a photo but in my driveway! On a side note planning on getting a dummy vent cover for that larger area. I think that would be much better than an ugly metal patch.

Rich, I wonder if your "too runny" problem is because you might be trying to spray too much paint too fast. Really light 'ghost' coats will solve the runs. It might take 4-6 light coats, but you can do a narrow area like the stripe successfully with a rattle can if each coat is just a light dusting. Like others have already said, if the silver tape fails, the adhesive left on the skin will be a bear to clean off.

I don't know what kind of aluminum tape you might be thinking of but the stuff I am familiar with is for sealing duct work. It is aluminum (not duct tape) and is very difficult to go on straight. It sticks good but I think the weather will loosen it off. I made some cooler cozies using it to tape up the foil insulation and over time and weather exposure it came loose.
If you pick something that is purpose designed for striping then it might work, sort of like wide pin stripping on a car???
Personally, I like Larry's idea of painting it in spite of the effort.

Ok, thanks guys for the feedback on the tape, I agree that either get it painted nicely with someone familiar with metallic paint or perhaps an automitive graphics line as mentioned. Any other thoughts appreciated.

Ok, we finally found an easy compromise. We didn't even know there was a Rustoleum metallic paint in the can, and we decided on the hammered silver. $11.50 for a quart at HD which isnt even gonna all be used. The hammered aspect will hide any brush strokes nicely and create a really neat look. Brushed it on a couple spots already and looks great. It is oil based but it's designed to be durable and isn't going to be on the whole camper just the strip obviously. But no over spray, no need to have someone do it for me, and no worry about the application being uneven.

The stuff looks great and no brush strokes if you spray it on. So I bet the silver would look just as good.
