I agree on the cheap tarp(s) for a short build. I will be checking out Tarps Direct for my longer range protection but will still use what I already have.
We don't have the sun up here that Larry does, desert UV can do a quick job on a tarp...

Scotty is sheltered in a 3 sided carport and altho we don't have the sun exposure Larry does, my $15 HF tarp disintegrated where it was exposed in one year. Like lots of HF stuff, sadly, cheap ain't cheap when you have to pay over and over in replacements.

Sorry, just offering options and opinions. No need to apologize carvelloafer. I was just pointing out that the tarps from Tarps Direct, even after shipping are about the same price as the HD tarps. That's what blew me away when I first found out about them. I just couldn't see throwing money away on tarps that last 6 weeks any longer. I went through enough tarps in 10 years to pay for my metal structure that I have now.

In Maine, the blue tarps turn into little flakes inside of six months (if there are no wind storms to rip out all the grommets sooner than that). The brown/silver ones might make it a year.
I gutted mine outside in the elements without removing the skins, by just opening seams.

This is kinda funny. Quite by accident I found the only picture I seem to have of a fully diapered trailer with the tee pee stick poking up through the removed top vent. This really does a good job of keeping the rain out of your exposed trailer. The reason I ran across this photo is because I'm going into surgery for my eye tomorrow morning and was trying to show a friend what I would look like for a while afterwards. This is my third eye surgery in the last year and a half. The photo below was taken a few days after the first one.

Good Luck with your eye surgery tomorrow. If you're going to look like a pirate for a while, then I hope it's all smooth sailing for ya! Here's wishes for a speedy recovery!

My apologies for not replying sooner. I've been traveling and 'off the grid' thanks to spotty internet service. I really appreciate the suggestions and the additional pictures. We are excited to get to work on the back skins soon. I think the cosmos have smiled on our little Shasta Compact project since I first posted. While walking our dogs, my husband picked up several good quality tools we were planning to purchase for free in a box set out of leftovers after a neighbor's garage sale. We ordered a trailer cover based on rough dimensions we provided to an ebay seller, but anticipating it wouldn't fit exactly. We couldn't find ready-made covers specifically for a '71 era Compact, so we were thrilled to discover how nicely it fit. I'll post a couple of pictures as soon as I get them transferred. I imagine ya'll will hearing a lot more from me as we get going.

Dumb question time again - what size should I buy? Tarp??? I make sure it almost touches the ground all the way around. That way you can diaper it at the bottom and it won't come off. Read this whole thread. I think I remember saying that you should tie the middle of the tarp to the frame work around the wheel well on both sides. Then you can diaper the front and rear and roll up either end for working on the trailer.

20 x 30 would work pretty well.
