I need to take my metal door apart to replace the rotten wooden frame inside. My biggest problem is removing the glass from the seal or removing the seal from the metal door with out breaking the window glass. Metal door is a sandwich, the rubber window seal holds the 2 metal door halves together. Rubber is probably original on this 1964 Phoenix camper it is very hard rubber. Am I wasting my time trying to save the rubber?

Ultimately you would not remove the glass from the seal, but the glass and seal from the door by pulling the outer edge of the seal in toward the glass and then pushing it through the door. I think you already got that. If its too hard you probably will not be able to do it, so cut it.. Then the problem is where to get a new seal ? You might try LMC truck to see if there was a similar used on fixed windows in trucks of the time. Perhaps your local glass shop has something as well..
lets us know what you find..
Good luck!

I haven't ever had much chance to work with anything like this, and when I have, I haven't had much luck with it. My thought is that, first, the old gasket is going to be hardened up to the point that it is going to be really unruly to work with. It also appears that it has shrunken back over time and should be replaced to ensure the seal when it goes back together. Vintagetrailersupply.com sells a locking gasket, which I think is similar to what you are looking at here. www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Small_Self_Locking_Gasket_p/vts-200.htmI am not sure that is what you need, but had seen it before and thought I would throw that out for you.

I wouldn't ruin the old gasket unless you have to. I'm pretty sure there is a replacement, but you never know.
