Went to a local kid fair today. They had face painting set up under the awning of a beautiful Shasta (compact?)  Unfortunately for the owner, they may have bought a bit of lipstick. I noticed all of the j-rail putty was old and cracked, where there was any putty at all. I think they removed it and reinstalled with original putty...   |

Looks lip-sticky to me. It also appears to have had the skin totally replaced on it. A Compact of the era should have the "gold-stripe" anodized band around it. Being as it is likely a lot, if not all, new skin, the j-rail is probably also new. Original J-rail would be near impossible to polish that perfectly, and would also be bent to follow the contour of the edge. You are correct, it is definitely missing the putty. It should have a layer under the J-rail, and be tapped into shape to sorta follow the contour of the edge. This is to tightly press the putty in between.
There should have been putty in between the overlap layer and the side skins, so it isn't likely completely unsealed. But, it will leak over time around the screws in the J-rail, and around those nail heads that are holding the siding together. This would not be a very difficult situation to correct. Do you know the owners at all? (If so get them on this board!)
Nice color, nice paint job, and nice awning, though.

I tried to find the owners, but no one I found knew who's trailer it was. It was also locked, so I couldn't see inside. |

Very interesting. My thought is how does that corner go in so much if there's wood behind it..maybe none there, or rotten? That's not sounding good either.

This makes me sad... Somebody probably tried and didn't understand the principal of what putty and J rail do. Sigh.
Is it possible to have a friendly chat with the owners, Dan? Most people really want to get sound advice. Wear a bullet proof vest.

WOW! I thought mine looked bad, but at least I don't have any gaps. You're right, Vikx (of course you're right), they must think that j-rail is decoration.
Wrong paint job for the year but I think the Z-stripe style looks good and makes for good lipstick, too.
