So Saturday my dad came over and we removed the roof. It had to be done, since it was coated with tar due to a tree falling and puncturing two holes in the top at some point in it's life. I had already JB welded the holes from the inside and patched it. So I started with the daunting task of scraping the tar which was 1/8-1/4 inch thick in most places. I tend to like to work smarter, not harder......regardless of hazards. Lol. So...... when I was building a pad for my boat to park on last year, I did some research as to the cheapest options. Though I ended up going with just gravel, I had read that farmers will use asphalt grindings and then spread a thin layer of diesel fuel on top and then after letting it set awhile, they will roll it, basically creating an asphalted driveway for 1/2 the price. Yes, the diesel slowly "melts" the asphalt.....which is basically what many of us had on our roofs whether we wanted it there or not. So, I used an old paint brush and brushed on diesel yesterday morning. I left it over night and checked it this morning and sure enough.....liquidy goo! When I am off work this evening I will work on getting everything scraped. I will try and remember to post pics when complete. Before (No "after" pics yet) Have a wonderful week everyone!

Wow. This is excellent advice, I have my entire roof vent surrounded with black tar that is beginning to age. Knowing that diesel will soften it up is awesome. Always pays off to try to research things, never know what you will find out.

Sad to see your picture links are not showing up. I have a slightly larger 67 Shasta that has been on hold for a year and I am just now getting back to. The pictures early in the thread are terrific and I will definitely be putting them to use over the next couple months.
Jennifer
Hmmm. Now I am wondering if it is something with Photobucket. I can't get my pictures to link.

Hopefully I can get it done this evening. Warning: It gets on EVERYTHING!

As I told Rich, I had to recoat the thicker stuff again last evening and will hopefully finish scraping tonight. My main concern now is how to clean all the smeared residue off once completely scraped. *sighs* Lol

Good evening all! So all total I have about 2.5 hrs on the roof. Two coats of diesel and finished a small amount of stubborn stuff with a heat gun. Though perhaps unconventional, cleaned it up with brake cleaner. Worked amazingly!! Going to use some mineral spirits and get the oils off as much as possible. Before: After: Have a good night all!

I am very please with how it turned out and how little time it took. A bit unconventional I'm sure, but hey......whatever helps speed up the process. Lol

I finished up the grey water drain last evening. Not happy with the cheap plastic water outlet from VTS since it barely covers the old hole. I just ordered a marine stainless one that's a bit larger and looks more appealing. I get the feeling though that I will be redoing the plumbing due to fittings. Trial and error throughout I guess. Also put on the last clear coat for the doors/drawer fronts. Tonight I am going to get the insulation installed on the roof. Tomorrow, the roof goes back on and I want to rehang doors. Hopefully I will also get the door clasps and handles installed as well. Have a good Friday everyone!

So I got off work a couple of hours early this afternoon. Used the time to insulate the roof. Also hung the doors and put on the chevron hardware. Still have to attach the drawer fronts and corresponding hardware. Below are the stained/finished doors with chevron pulls installed: Have a good night all!
