I have the original metal water tank that still holds pressure and appears fine externally. I will be checking it tomorrow by unscrewing the valve core and then adding some water then closing and pressurizing again. I don't know the max psi to use and I'm worried about pumping out the water into the copper lines should there be rust or particulate. I know there are some tank sanitizer products, but doubt they can handle rust which is probably in there. Should I attempt any test with a potentially rusty tank, or just drain test it first? I'm trying to save money by keeping the tank, but would it be safer to change to a plastic tank and a water pump?

Ugh, more $$. I need to figure out how to re-use the fill inlet then...it's pretty stuck and the exterior hole flange is huge so I can't just use a nice fill cap and cover.

You can probably adapt the old filler to whatever plastic tank inlet with a variety of plumbing parts (esp. flexible Fernco couplers), that's what I did once. BTW… your profile says you were "born to fix stuff"… get to work. You may also be interested in this low cost solution in a recent thread: vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/2085/interesting-plumbing-concept-water-jugsI have a pump system with a 20 gal. plastic tank for showering and sink water, but I don't drink from it. No, no. Those tanks quickly become incubators, even with bleach cleaning. Next to my regular sink faucet, I have a hand pump which draws water from a store bought jug of fresh water in the cabinet below, for drinking.

We don't drink from a trailer water supply either, we usually have a big drinking water jar with a tap up on the counter, although we can now fit something into our larger refrigerator.
