My one and only store, Lowe's, has 1/4" carriage bolts. I know, because that's what's in my frame 4" long. I don't really want to bolt mine all the way through my wall. I might put one bolt and the rest screws. I figure if mine stayed in with screws for 52 years, it'll make it a few more. I think most are missing because people took them off. They either didn't like them or they sold them later down the road.

The thing about a carriage bolt is that you can slot the head if Wing surgery is necessary... the skinniest they come is 1/4"? You'd have to figure out a way to seat the square without ruining the aluminum. Maybe just a couple to point the thief in a different direction...

I don't think anyone will be stealing the wings off a camper at a campground. But if you store it at a storage lot or out in the open that I would think would be the easiest way to have them stolen. You could fill in the screwdriver slots with a JB weld or something to deter an easy removal. Or if your confident you won't take them of then grind off the slots ?

INMO The general public of thieves at large have no idea what the value of the wings are. They only want what's inside the camper (TV, Stereo, computer, phone, purse, wallet) or the whole camper. The only person who would steal just the wings is a Shasta person and I just refuse to believe that a Shasta person would steal wings! No one values them but us. Also they stayed on just fine with just the screws and spacers for 40+ years, IMHO lag bolts are over kill. Most are gone from people damaging them backing up into something or throwing them out with the trash to make their old canned ham shape camper look like the newer boxier shaped ones back in the day. Just sayin'!

I hate to be the naysayer in the group, but where I grew up outside a big city the kids (gangs really) would just rip them off because they're interesting. Then tossed them in the street.
Rest areas, restaurants, etc...as people here have mentioned...are not places they want to leave their mint camper unattended for too long. Mobiltec says he parks within sight wherever possible...for a reason. The same people who go into restrooms at campgrounds and gouge their name in the stall door, or take their lighters and burn the wall, are always looking for trouble.
These wings are fun-trouble begging to happen.
I wish I grew up in a trusting small town or out west where people trusted each other. Where I grew up, if you had wings on the camper and parked it in your yard, in sight of the road, you could kiss those wings goodbye.
And they sure wouldn't take them off with a screwdriver.
By the way, you people are very kindhearted and trusting. I like that.

Just sayin'! Just had one wing stolen off my Shasta 2 weeks ago in broad daylight at a busy fast food restaurant. Just one wing. Of course it was the side that was facing away from the restaurant. So frustrating

Sorry to hear that. I guess I'm wrong. On the other hand between the dogs inside, me parking right where I can see it at all times, the pistol I have hooked to my belt and the crazy mean unapproachable look I always have on my brow might be a deterrent
I guess we all should start using the square bit cam style screws instead of Phillips. (or lag bolt from inside oh the humanity of it all)
Who ever is doing this, start praying because if I ever catch someone doing that to mine I would get all mid evil on their ace!
