If there is anyone out there that is doing a restoration on their Shasta and have the wings off the camper, I would like and appreciate VERY much for someone to give me the specs for the spacers....Outside Diameter, Inside Diameter, and Overall Length. Thank you for your help! Keep Calm and Camp On! Randy

I bought nylon spacers from the local hardware store. They were 3/4" in length...not sure what the in and out diameters were, I bought stainless mounting screws at the same time so I just fit the screws to the spacers.

Ace hardware has chrome and plastic spacers that will work.

I have an original somewhere, that was still attached to my '64. But is really nothing all that special.
At one time someone suggested using plastic sink riser pipe. It is pliable and is easy to cut to length, and if you measure right you can use a washer at either end to keep the screw head from sinking into the aluminum.

I have to look around...seems I had ONE original spacer that I got off my Compact. It was still stuck to a screw that was sticking out of the camper (the first time I'd seen that they mounted the wings from the inside). Thanks for your quick responses cuz I'd sure like to see the wings on my camper.......NOW! LOL

Okay, so this might sound ignorant, BUT where do the spacers go? Between the screw head and the wing, between the wing and the trailer body, or--

They go between the wing and the camper so that when the wings rest over the J-channel, they're evenly gapped from front to back. I guess they also kind a protect the screw as well. And Hoosier? NO question is ignorant...

Thank you! But... Seems like one question (ignorant or otherwise!) generally leads to another. My '61 Airflyte had wraparound wings - no j-channel to go around. So I presume I won't want to use spacers on mine? She came without her wings, but I have a pair of originals I am rebuilding, hope to install them soon.

If I understand the wrap-around wings right, the body of the wing mounts on the spacers, and the tail of the wing that flies past the rear edge of the trailer is two pieces, which are attached together. The body of the wing that is mounted to the body of the trailer is hollow and the spacers keep the wing from collapsing in on the screws. I have to admit that I am only guessing here. I have not yet actually seen a set of the older wrap-arounds, only the 27" hollow ones from the later models. You may want to try contacting Tyler as he has been researching and building the replacements. www.nastyshasty.blogspot.com/search/label/WINGS%20-%20For%20Sale

IIRC, the wings were thicker from their tips to the rear of the camper, so that they butt up against the rear skin, and only about half as thick where they ride on the side skin. So they sort of "wraparound" the rear corner, causing a break in the j-rail. While the other wings are the same thickness their whole length, and ride entirely outside the plane of the side skins.
Dunno nuthin' 'bout no space-ahs, I ain't a-got no wings.

Welp...after spending most of the morning running errands, I decided I was going to install my wings today. Since the previous owner painted them blue, I was going to color match them to the anodized gold band and just polish the frames (for now anyway). THAT idea just came to a halt when I tried to polish the frames with truck box polish to find out the the p/o also painted the frames silver....UUUUGH! Had I knowd that, I'd a picked up some sort of 'safe for aluminum' stripper. Bummer...it'll have to wait.

I went to Lowe's and bought 10x3" stainless machine screws and bought 1/4" plastic tubing and made 3/4" long spacers. Looks like they'll work great.

I took a pic of my Shasta Compact wings before I destroyed the spacer by cutting the screw off. My wings fit on top of the J-rail. There is no cut out. The spacer is a piece of metal covered with rubber. image by susieqilvu, on Flickr If anyone else has a Compact with wings mounted like this, please let me know what year and maybe where it was made.

This is a question concerning an older posting about your Shasta Compact wings. Your camper is a 1962 like mine, I think? What size were your wings? Mine are MIA. A chart I saw on another thread said 8x36. That sounds really long to me. The spacers look like a highway insurance claim waiting to happen. But I guess they don't go airborne at 55mph.
