Our 1963 Friendship Vacationaire had worn non-original 14 inch rims and passenger tires (195/75/14) when we found it. Towed fine, no sway. Could not fit size 205 in the wheel well, and cannot find trailer tires in the narrower width. Pondering whether to stick with the new passenger tires we bought (before learning about the need for trailer tires) or to downsize to 13 inch. Camper has drop floor and worried about lowering the ground clearance even more. Pretty sure the camper weighs less than 2000 lbs. Passenger tires are rated to easily carry that weight. Also wondering if the issue of trailer tires has something to do with the needed capacity of trailers to regularly haul heavy cargo, which the camper will not, making the case for accepting passenger tires.

Don't worry about using passenger tires, even radials. I have run radials on my Shasta for over 2000 miles going to Pismo and have never had the "sway problems" that have been alledged by members on the Shasta site. These radials were recommended by a good friend in the commercial tire business and, no, he didn't sell them to me. Radial passenger tires work fine as long as they are adequately rated for the weight.

I'm undoubtedly chiming in 6mo too late on this, but I was wondering if the 205's wouldn't fit because of the width or because of the height of the tire&wheel. As you mention the "narrower" width and non-original 14" rims, I would presume you are looking at a wheel backspacing issue, not a tire width issue. As you have noted that 195's are difficult to locate, esp when you are stranded on the side of the road just East of YouKnowWhere, you should perhaps consider changing to a rim that will accomodate a more readily avail tire. or you could click here 8): www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Radial+857TireRack is a great place to deal with. Great prices, fast shipping. Since they are out of state (for me, I don't have to pay Sales Tax or Disposal Fees. The local shop mounts and balances for $12/tire

Mounting the tires is the problem: The 205s often won't clear the hub and side of the wheel well. Sometimes, they will slip up and in when flat. The fit is OK after inflated to proper pressure. In other words, once the tire is mounted, clearances are within reason inside the wheel well.
