Wendy suggested I use iron on patches to reinforce the grommets so I think I'll try that as the wife is not sure her machine will sew the awning fabric without a lot of tweaking. I've seen people use duct tape on tarps, but even I have more taste than that. For awning poles, since this is mostly for a single rally, I went the direct from China route (though I'm sure all the other options are made in China as well). I like Mel's Cabela's option, but the ones I got store in a much smaller space in their own bag and "snap" together so they can't collapse. Mine arrived in a few weeks in good condition. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07KYX7YB2/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b_track_package_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Of course I'm seeing this now. I just bought $70 of second hand sunbrella and paid $45 to patch the retractable awning for my house..................Ugh!!!

I just thought I would update this thread with a couple of photos that show the thickness and quality of the Akeko awning, and a finished one with a scallop. If you are on a budget this is a fantastic option for $50- $100 depending on the size you buy. I created this one for a young friend with a tent trailer. I sewed the scallop on the front using a regular machine and then sewed awning cord on the back that we ordered from Sailrite. If using a regular machine just use the thickest nylon thread it will accept and go over the stitching twice. Buy an grommet kit, from harbour freight and install the grommets with a hammer. You can thicken the fabric for the awning holes a couple of ways. -One option is to simply create a wide seam for the scallop. This will give the grommets enough fabric to bite into. -the other option is to just buy an iron on patch in a matching colour and that will thicken it. Have fun!

I sorta took over this thread for a bit, so I should at least post how ours turned out. I used iron on patches in the corners and grommets from Amazon. Wife didn't feel her machine was up to the task of sewing on the scallop, so we left it off. Great to have on a 90 degree socal day.

Hi Friends,
As a witness to Dan's efforts with this awning, it came off really looking very nice. I was standing under it in the 85 degree sun that day and it made a difference in making enough shade. You would never know it was cheap because it didn't look cheap.
I recommend it.
Cheers,
Rod

Great Job Dan! One way to get the scallop on with a home machine is to cut off the factory edge on both sides and then sew it. This eliminates trying to sew through so many layers of fabric. Looks great either way!
