I was in BC Canada camping and found Birch 1/8 inch at the local lumber yard. Maglio Lumber Center in Trail BC (Near WA border) was $19 a sheet plus the exchange so around $15! Very good quality too and no duty across the border today.

When I ask at the lumber place for 1/8" birch veneer plywood one response I get is "you mean 'wacky wood'"~ I don't really know if I mean "wacky wood" or not! Does anyone know all the names that this goes by? When I looked into the plywood mentioned in Somerville MA there was literally a wood there called wacky wood, and then also another listing for 1/8" baltic birch plywood but only in 5' x 5' sheets, not 4x8 or 8x4 (they describe the bend direction being different in these two). Then they also have what they call "bending birch" in 1/8" which has the back face being lauan, described as the most pliable; then there's Italian poplar veneer~ does anyone ever use this instead of birch and how different is it once shelacked? I'd be hesitant to order any of this without seeing in person, and I do tend to always want to pick out any of my lumber in person (i.e. check for warp, etc in 2x4s, pick out the best ones).

Wacky wood is bending plywood and has all the veneers going in the same direction, as apposed to normal plywood where each ply is perpendicular to it's neighbor. bending plywood is used as an underlayment and covered with a show veneer. Think curved high end furniture, etc. Baltic birch HATES to bend, but it's very stable for flat surface work. I's also vanilla white and unless you want to give it dozens of coats of shellac, it will not look like a 'birchwood beauty'. Not to mention the sheet size problem (unless you have a really skinny trailer).

As to Larry's info on the beetle... wonder if some of those mills who were prohibited from shipping it still have stock sitting in the back of a warehouse somewhere? Wonder how to find which mills were making it before the ban?

Thanks Mel. The midwest is the place to find birch these days. And it's a good price.

I just called Channel City Lumber and Karen said she will get more info for me. I just replaced ash paneling with oak in both the Shasta and the Kenskill. I've looked for ash for over a year for these two trailers and finally gave up. I may just have to take a drive up there if they can actually get the stuff. Then I'll have to rip out the oak and replace it again with ash. But I think it might be worth the effort....

Hi Larry, I think I mentioned similar in another thread a few months ago and you called them then. I don't remember the results of the call, and did not pursue the ash myself as the wife is not a fan.

Are there any good pics that show what ash looks like compared to birch? I'm curious since I haven't settled on what I'm going to use.

Shasta Ash: VERY busy birch wall in an effort to match the ash: Ceiling ended up clearer birch from PO. Very nice quality ply from Canada. Here's an example of different woods used by Shasta: Side of cabinet is ash. Corners and top frame are unknown wood, original. The ceiling is the clear birch previously mentioned and busy birch wall...
