Good day all.
I am extremely happy to have come across this site (found the closed down one first.. so very happy this one is active)
I think I am needing all your experience and guidance.
I found this camper about a month ago local. Loved the look and it brought back memories of camping with my grandparents as a child.
I have a 13 year old son.. and when i saw this camper i thought that the necessary repairs were something he and i might (might) be able to manage.. and then be able to make new memories traveling together.
The previous peeps had fixed her up, kept her garaged and used to take her to car shows..
Everyone meet Daisy, a 1969 Shasta LoFlyte
This was Daisy in her heyday
link www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-6-25_69BuickSptWgnwShastaWeb-Large.jpg (hope it's ok to post this link to an image found on web -- if someone could instruct me in how to upload pix into my messages i would add my newer ones)
In the last couple years Daisy has been exposed to the elements. And on my initial look i did notice some water spots.. figured we could just reseal everything and be good to go. But after reading, and watching some videos (thanks mobiltec) i am unsure now.
Am at a loss on how to proceed.
She had a broken back window - I've removed, and had the glass replaced, but there is a corner of the window frame that i can see under the skin that is rotted. And the storage compartment below also has some water rot. From inside the compartment, I can see the left corner bottom edge has some water damage and maybe the floor edge
There was leaking around the vent (like in moblitec's video) - it had been sealed at least 3 times.. i've been removing the old sealers (i can understand why one should stay away from silicone) how do i know if the ceiling panel is too far gone? removing the roof is hard to contemplate.
There is also water damage seen inside near the front windows. currently untouched, but will need to be addressed.
I guess the more i look and undo things, the more overwhelmed i am getting. It is a project for my son and i to do together, and i am willing to try and learn, but i am nowhere at a level of skill i have seen some of you possess. I hope this post comes across as a plea for guidance, rather then a whine..
would any of you be willing to skype with my son and I to help me determine how to proceed?
Would appreciate any encouragement offered.
I am so glad that this site was created to replace the old, i hope to be able to pick your brains and make a few friends along the way.
Thanks so much
eMie and Eric
