Hey all, Read all the posts about trailer lights/tow lights and thought I had it figured out with the great info on here. First of all I am using a four post connector both with car and trailer. My 62 Compact has electric brakes but not using them as the new Ford Escape with a tow package does not have the wiring set up for electric brakes. I've towed it and at 1100+ pounds have no problems with not using the electric brakes. Have not removed, only not connected now. So... tested to make sure all lights were working and used ideas on how to test and they work. I have the typical brown ( said on an earlier post it was black but is brown), red and green at the rear end. The wiring coming from the rear as above plus a black wire which I am assuming as the ground. 4 way Connector has a white wire for ground so have those two connected but all lights are working including the side marker lights with lights turned on at the car. With vehicle lights off turn signals work perfectly although get just a faint glowing of the filament on the opposite side light bulb from one blinking brightly. But, when vehicle head lights are on, turn signals do not work on trailer even though working on the car. Could this be a ground situation as believe that black wire coming from the rear of the trailer forward is the ground wire as tail lights are hooked up to it. As you can probably tell, electrical is not my strong suit. Unfortunately I did not replace existing wiring when I had the rear skin off. Existing appeared to be in good shape and figured it would be just one more problem I might have. I could live with the turn signals not working with lights on as do not plan to be towing this at night but could be in daytime with it raining so would want lights on. Any ideas Thanks, Mike

This definitely sounds like a ground problem. The faint light on the opposite side usually indicates a bad ground or a crossed hot. Make sure that your fixtures are all grounded well to the skin and that the skin conducts your ground, i.e. to the frame of the trailer. A simple way to test that is with a temporary lead wire connected to the j-channel or a screw in the skin then screwed or clipped to the frame underneath.
It is possible that the black is not a ground wire. Disconnect that from your ground side and test again, before you go any further changing stuff around.
By the way, I would never assume that you will always be able to tow in ideal conditions, and never after dark. "Make it work", as my science teacher used to tell me.

Ten is correct. The black wire is not a ground. Disconnect. It is probably the "extra" hot wire that operates off the vehicle parking lights. Sometimes, there's a ceiling light and/or the trailer clearance lights can be on in camp.
Re-Ground your skin with a light gauge wire to frame. Green, Brown and Red are correct as you describe them.
All should work with a good, clean ground. WHITE is recommended...

Listen to the above and you should have no problems, it is definitely a bad ground problem. You may need to connect the white wire to the trailer frame as some systems don't use a wire for ground. Depending on the hitch is a bad way to set up the ground because it is not dependable relying on the hitch to make contact with the tow vehicle. The first thing I would do is detach the black wire, and see what happens, then connect the the white wire to a good clean bare metal spot on the car at one end and the trailer at the other. This should give you a grounded trailer frame, if it solves the problem great you are done if not ground the rear skin that your taillights are fastened on to the frame of the trailer. if all works great now you are done if not you will need to ground the light units to the skin. This is easier than running individual ground wires since you already have put trailer back together. I personally like to run a complete hard wired ground to the lights plus all new power wires as I am rebuilding the trailer but since you didn't this should solve your problem.

Hey y'all, Thanks so much for the advice !!! Here's a couple of further questions - the right side trailer wires coming off of the harness running the length of the trailer are green, brown and black. The left side are green, red and black. It is a small bundle of 4 wires that splits off at the rear. The original Bargman lights have a red, green and black wire. The red and brown go to the stop light/turn signal bulb on their respective sides and the green goes to the running light/tail light bulb. Have them hooked up with original wires brown to right and red to left side. Obviously hook up the green to green as it is the tail light circuit. That leaves me with the original black wire on the harness hooking up to the black wire on the Bargman light ? But what do I hook it up to at the hitch end ? I have the white wire from the new four way showing that to be the ground which I believe is hooked up to a ground on the Escape's harness. This is a factory equipped tow package so can't really trace it anywhere as in the Escape harness. Confused is an understatement. I have grounded the new aluminum skin to the trailer frame at the bottom and tried to snake a wire back down the rear between the new skin and the wooden frame but no success getting it down to the frame. Should mention I have switched out to LED's so literally getting one small LED on the top of the bulb that is on when opposite side turn signal engaged and all LED's lit up. Does also make the Escape's turn signals blink more rapidly as now hooked up and know that is not right either ! Confused in South Carolina, Mike
