Meet 'Mayfly' our new camper. We've actually had her since last fall but haven't done a whole lot with her. She's been out a few times last fall to get a feel and we've converted the interior bed to to a full size bed and laid vinyl wood flooring inside. I figured if I made this post I might get over the fear I have of starting restoration since I know theirs rot behind the skin. I've seen to water spots on the inside for there to not be. The question is how bad is it. Back side with temporary tail lights on her. My future in laws paid for them so I can't complain but they will be replaced I do have the wings off and inside. I'm not sure if I can get them clean as they've been taped with something across the back and have been spray painted silver. In all her glory tucked in beside the garage on the alley. She does have some bangin' new fly fishing curtains in her! Rescued from Nelson Ledges Road Course here in Ohio, I do find instances of 200 mph tape on her body. Flipping screws everywhere. I see JB weld in my future. This is our new fly fishing companion, Tai. She is also a rescue from a home where she endured 4 years of abuse. She's been with us 4 months and is beginning to make huge strides. Last project before starting the camper is getting those raised beds in the back completed. We are expanding from 32 sq ft of growing space to nearly 100 so I have to get that done ASAP. The garage is full of our bicycles and kayaks plus it's about 1 ft short to get the camper into to work on her so tarping is going to be the order of the day. Eventually the camper will be cream over blue with a metallic Shasta stripe. I plan on making her look as original as possible from the outside but the inside will be all fly fishing. I've got some plans that I'm not quite ready to share yet but needless to say I'm a good woodworker and electrician. Just been a long time for metal work. Thanks for checking it out, Ben

Your skins look really good except for that one taped up bang up. Do you have some interior pics? Any signs of water damage on the inside?
Beautiful dog. Tai is so lucky you found her.

And strip those wings and polish them; they will be beautiful. Looks like they painted over the metal around your windows, too. Take the windows out and strip and polish the frames. They will look so much nicer.

That's in the plans Susie. No shots of the inside but I'll turn Beth loose this weekend with her camera and get some for you. My phone doesn't have a flash.

I'm hoping to not replace any skins at all if I can patch the smaller portions.

Your skins look really straight which is a good sign. If I had to guess about rot just from looking, I'd say, check around the wheel wells and from the wheel wells back. Get under it with an ice pick or something else that will poke and test the wood at the bottom. That will give you an even better idea of what lies beneath. Test all four corners, too.

I'll peel her skirts back like a prom date and check for rot. I'm hoping there isn't a massive amount back there. Wheel wells, back corners, and doors are my bet.

What size tarp would you recommend for covering a Shasta Compact? Mines about your size Susie.

Thanks, Susie. We're going to get pics tonight of the interior. Or tomorrow. The fence you see behind the camper is actually getting moved to the front of the camper during the restoration to keep our homeless river population (they camp on the rivers here) out of the camper.

Nice camper Ben! It will be a real gem when you get it done. I'm thinking a 12 x 16 tarp would work. You might consider folding the 50 x 30. Not to mention, it's heavy...
Thank you for posting the pictures. My heart goes out to Tai. We lost our Border Collie last year, the best dog ever.

The 50x 30 will be really long on one side but it needs to be at least 25 ft front to back and 18 to 20 feet across to cover the trailer from top to bottom.

vikx, it's odd that we got the best of both worlds. I got a Border Collie that I love and she's a low energy Border. It's an odd thing.
The camper will be pretty awesome. I did find out that it was 'restored' at one point many years ago. The interior paneling is all nailed in poorly which might allow me to take it out easier sense I know for a fact that there's water damage on the back wall and above the door.
We made great progress last night in the yard and we'll hopefully be able to finish filling the raised beds. That should happen this morning. Once that's done I'll be moving the fence. This is really a huge push to clear our plates of all the other outdoor projects so that we can focus on the trailer and fishing.
We'll have more photos today, all interior shots and then it'll be time to start stage tools and and storage in the garage so we can get started!
Ben
