Hello Everybody,
I was in the RV shop the other day wanting to order a case of RV butyl putty tape. That's the off white newer style putty with crinkly paper... NOT Butyl Tape.
So the supplier was sold out of 1/8 x 3/4 and 1 x 3/16, the two most common sizes. Turns out they may be taking it off the market. Curious, I chatted with the sales guy. He says that new trailer manufacturers have quit using this type of putty because it *FAILS*. Asked for clarification, he said, "it dries out and cracks". Really? This putty has been used since the 90s, so not sure how many years before failure. I've seen good putty on some of the older rigs.
Anyway, I wanted to let you all know and see if anyone has heard this. I've had very good luck with the off white putty. It's a bit sticky, but OK to use in cold weather. The original old tannish putty tape is still good stuff but isn't so handy in cooler weather.
Just a heads up. NO guarantee the above info is correct. Just seemed odd that it wasn't available, and there were reasons.

Ditto...Confirmed here too.
Lately only been able to get a stickier grayish butyl blend on smooth tan paper. Can't seem to find the off white crinkled any more....Mid West Great lakes area.

I've only used two kinds. I used the gray with smooth brown paper and I liked it because it sticks really well, but even when the temps were high, it wasn't gooey. I ran out of that and had a roll from VTS that looks like the same color but has white paper. It doesn't stick as well, as a matter of fact, I have to redo my door trim because I actually pulled a spot out when I was trimming it.

I wonder if the newer stuff is having issues in warmer drier climates like ours. Lots and lots of people take their RVs out here in the winter months, and the combination of sun+dry+warm is really brutal on rubber and plastics. (We had some Rubbermaid containers recently dry rot in the shed, and they were completely out of the elements.) If that stuff works well in cold weather it might not do so well in the southwest deserts.

Hard to know but I believe the weather is a factor in the white putty disappearance.
One of my oldest builds is the 57 Corvette and it is doing fine. The putty looks no worse than expected; a few small flaws. I sealed the top with a very thin layer of Gutter Seal which could be done again.
I guess it's either butyl tape or standard putty tape for now.

I've never used anything but the original gray stuff with white crinkly paper. Still using it and have not heard of it going out of manufacture. Think I will stock up though. I use mostly the 1/8 inch thick by one inch wide now. I used to use a lot of the 3/4 inch stuff but it just doesn't quite cover what is needed so I went to one inch.

Is there a place you get the crinkly backed putty online? VTS I think just has the smooth.

I don't know where they get it but it's priced very well. One inch by one eighth is $6.95 per roll. I've seen it as high as $11 in places like Ace Hardware. A side note about putty tape. Vikx taught me a great little tip. Take a small block of 3/4 inch wood and a hammer and tap the J Rail down in between the screws. It tightens the seal between the J rail and the skin. Does a great job at it too. Read more: vintagetrailertalk.freeforums.net/thread/3957/putty-problem?page=1#ixzz3TL6dQPf9
