My wife and I are looking to head out of the Chicago area in the next few weeks and head south to warmer weather. Is anyone aware of vintage trailer rallies or good places to go? We have been to Key West and didn't want to go that far this trip. Our son and daughter-in-law live in NOLA and we will be sure to visit them. Help us get out of the cold!

Hey Mark,
We had similar ideas for a 4 to 6 week trip from New England in Feb. Due to unforeseen circumstances our plans have changed.(All good). Our plan was to hightail it down to North FL to visit family, then make our way west along the Gulf Coast and eventually to southern New Mexico and possibly Arizona. ( Then regretfully, back home.) I checked state parks along the route and made an itinerary which made the max. trip each day 4 to 5 hours. State parks are very reasonable and most are open at this time of year.
Good luck and let us know what you are up to!

I was wondering how far South people have come with their camper. We came to Belize for a month to escape the cold. Instead of a cabin on the beach it would be great to have our 1962 Forester. Has anybody come this far South? Any problems driving through Mexico?

NC, you are a brave soul. I do envy your warm cabin on the beach. We went as far as the TX/MX border and camped in Big Bend. I would not take my camper or vehicle to any part of Mexico. I don't care how touristy or safe they say, says this girl who was once upon a time detained in customs for eight hours and not treated very nicely. And I am an adventurous one who has been known to do things which makes other people question my sanity.
We were in Puerto Rico last Feb. and it was awesome. I even found some campgrounds there. Now if I could just float my Shasta over there, I'd be happy.

Mark I recommend you check out the campgrounds at Gulf Islands National Seashore NP in FL and MS on your way to NOLA. www.nps.gov/guis/index.htmAnd have some King Cake for me when you get to NOLA. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Has anybody come this far South? Any problems driving through Mexico? We pull a large (5' by 10') Tear Drop into Baja California each year to spectate/camp at the Baja 1000 off road race. The farthest south we have gone so far is Gonzaga Bay, about 300 miles south of the U.S. border.
We have gone for the past eight years, and never had a problem. Just don't do stupid things, use your head, and don't flaunt your wealth, ie: No Rolexes, and No Gold Chains!
