Hi, Today, I was pulling the lower rear curbside skin from my trailer, Andy, and I had to remove the marker light to do it. Below is the fixture in it's rusted glory. Structurally, it's still sound. The metal shows no thin spots, and the wire coming out is plastic coated and not fabric coated. I was looking for suggestions on how best to remove the rust and repaint. Would it be okay to soak it in vinegar? Also, there seems to have been a gasket inside where the lens pressed against when the lense was seated in the receptacle. Someone painted silver paint on the interior at one time. Image below really shows what i think is a dried out gasket along the interior perimeter of the receptacle. rear of marker light

Chiming in. Have the same marker lights on my Westerner. Soaked mine in a vinegar/water solution for 24+ hours. Helped a little at loosening the rust. To really attack the rust, I drilled a hole in my plywood top work bench, bigger than the back of the bulb assembly. I removed the wiring pigtail/spring, then inserted the bulb housing into the hole making the front of the assembly flush to the top of the workbench; then secured with screws. Using a crimped cup brush attachment and drill, you can then polish the inside of the marker light. I used a flat blade screwdriver to remove any dried up gasket prior to polishing. To clean the back side, I mounted the assembly face down on the work bench, then used the drill/brush to remove the rust. I used a battery post/terminal brush to clean the inside of the bulb socket. New gaskets can be purchased to complete the restore. Before installing, I placed a circle cutout of aluminum foil in the assembly to increase the brightness of the light.
My question to others, what can be done to the metal housing to prevent future rusting, besides Rustoleum? A clear acrylic spray?

Thanks Dan.
i was just watching a video on removing rust on a vintage car. He was using a mixture of vinegar and water mixed 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water. Does using water with vinegar strengthen the solution or weaken it, I wonder? I currently have a very rusted tail lamp bezel sitting in straight vinegar. For the past week and it seems to be working. Maybe it should be mixed with H2O? Haven't taken a wire cup brush to it yet.
How does the spring and wire come out? Rod

I would say it weakens it? The wire pig tail and spring should pop out. Might need to use a nail or something on the back side to coax it out. I also used diaelctric grease to coat the pig tail end before re-installing to prevent rust from hindering the bulb contact.

You can buy new pigtail wiring and the springs at the auto parts store. Of course I have a video on this.
