Hi all, Short version of the story... 1969 Lo Liner with original welded screw jack on the tongue of the trailer. The crank no longer raises or lowers the center pipe, and the center pipe can be easily moved up and down by hand. Fixable? If so, any ideas? Thanks much.

Welded on the front of the A frame? Not the 3 pyramid bolt thing?

Hey RJ, It's a hybrid. Two bolts through the top of the A frame, but the outside tube seems to be welded too. I'll try to attach pictures tomorrow. Thoughts?

The few I've dealt with have had the three bolts down through the flat, triangle frame around the jack, easy enough to replace with a "vintage" diameter jack (different from the ones they sell at the big stores nowadays by a bit on the diameter, enough to make the modern jacks not fit down through the opening... ask me how I know, lol). The mechanism of the jack itself is simple enough with a couple of gears and some steel sleeves through the sides of the jack housing but not sure if your's is repairable. If welded, you may end up getting someody with the proper gear to cut the old one out/off so you can replace with a new jack. After all, you've gotta be able to lift the trailer off and on from the tow rig, and, prop the old trailer up once the rig is pulled away. I'm sure somebody with more knowledge than I will chime in.. Good luck buddy.

My experience has been that I have never been able to successfully repair any age tongue jack. They have all failed within a week. Especially the older ones. Now I just replace them for safety sake. You should ALWAYS be careful not to have body parts under the frame when dealing with jacking a trailer. you don't want that weight falling on your toes. But a new jack will help circumvent that problem as well.

Great tutorial. Dealing with that ring that is left behind is shown well here.

Thanks guys. I can't dig into it until Friday. Is there anyway to replace the screw/guts without replacing the trailer tube? Right now I have 4 redundant jack stands holding it up. Thanks again,

Thanks again, I have taken two "vintage jacks", and made one good one. The reason I did it, was because I wanted to save the jack with a teardrop shaped tube. I took the entire guts out of one and welded the screw nut into my teardrop tube.
The problem you run into is they are all different makes/models/years and very few internal parts interchange. The two jacks I rebuilt, did not even turn in the same direction. If your having a tough time figuring out how to cut the jack off of the A frame, don't even try to rebuild the jack, just replace it with a new one.
You can buy a good USA made jack for under $50.

Hi Guys, I've attached pics of what I have. Of course it's not straightforward and doesn't seem like a standard 3 bolt lift. It seems the bearing disintegrated and one of the welded mounting brackets has come off. I'm not even sure how to take it apart. I took off the top cap, but underneath it's welded shut. The trailer hole is about 2 1/4" or 2 3/8", but I'm not sure a standard 3 bolt bracket is going to work because of those wonky cutouts. Suggestions?

...and...this is a '69 Lo Liner. Any idea what weight capacity I might look for in a new jack? Thanks.

...and...this is a '69 Lo Liner. Any idea what weight capacity I might look for in a new jack? Thanks. All the new jacks I have found lately are 2000 pounds... I don't think you'll have to worry much... I've found them new for a little as $28 each. I bought four last time at $25 each. All are side cranks. The most expensive places to buy them is an RV store. Try ETrailer on line.

I just rebolted my jack on the 65 Loliner, same wacky cut outs. The front bolt is put up thru the tongue from the underside. It has a large washer to keep it from pulling thru. There is (barely) enough room to slip a long extension and socket to hold the bolt from below. Place a washer, lock washer and nut on the bolt, then snug enough to hold the bolt in place.
Our Loliner has pieces of iron underneath to the side of the other two holes. A square nut will jam against the metal to keep from spinning. We inserted the two side bolts down and snugged them as well. All three are then tightened securely.
A regular 2000 lb jack fit our lower circular mount. VTS sells 1000 lb jacks for the older trailers with a smaller sleeve.
Hope this helps. Hard to take pictures of the inside of a tongue and coupler. LOL.

Hi all, Thanks for all of your help!!!. Vikx...That gives me a really good starting point for the wacky cutouts. I ended up getting a top screw, 2000 lb Husky off of Amazon for $26. 2 day Prime is a good-thing living in the middle of nowhere. Fingers crossed...The 2 3/16" outer tube SHOULD make through the hole...if not I can route it out another 1/16" or so. Now that I've seen the 2 bolt, questionable weld, 45 year old jack system that was on the trailer...it's time for an upgrade and worth $26. FYI...I finally threw in the towel on redoing the inside of this trailer and just got it back from John Watkins at DJ Custom Restoration in Basalt, CO...stellar job. Can't recommend him enough. Thanks again for your help.
