I have a 15 ft Shasta and to save money I thought I would try to sew my own awning. I've seen a few tutorials online that were pretty good, but none of them actually said how many yards of fabric they used. I read somewhere that someone used 7+ yards of fabric, so I bought 8 yards of Sunbrella fabric off the web. I am hoping I got enough! Has anyone here made one, and can you give me some pointers? ALSO, I do not know how exactly the poles and rope work (yes, I am blonde... ) can someone explain how you set those up? Thanks experts! Brenda

Best way to see how to set poles and ropes is to study pictures of them and see how awning looks then do yours the same way as one that you like.

You will totally have enough fabric. If your awning will be 8.5 feet wide or less. Check out my blog for instructions on how to sew one up: thismontanalife.comYou can also email me if you have any questions! Good luck! Diane

Hi experts...I bought fabric on a great deal online, and when I got it, realized the stripe runs the width of the fabric, not the length. SO..there will be a seam in the middle of the awning running the same way as the trailer rail, NOT the same way as the stripes. I didn't even think about that when I ordered the fabric! Is this typical or did I just screw up? It's already here and I do like the fabric, so I will go ahead and make it, but I am really hoping it doesn't look awful. Thoughts anyone? (I also asked on the Glamping Forum, sorry for the duplicate, but I need !

Just make sure your stripes line up when you seam it together. Sure is pretty fabric. I am just finishing mine up after following Redwings tutorial. Wasn't too hard, the most difficulty I had was putting the binding on the scalloped edges, up in the valley part where they meet with the next scallop. the mat'l. above looks pretty wide is it folded in half?

Hi lovnvintage...no. it's not folded, it just sort of looks like it the way it is draped. I think it is 54 inches wide? Did you do the French Seams? I'd love to see pictures of yours..

Yes I did. I have to find room to spread it out for pics. It has been taking up my whole dining room all week. All that's left is sewing on the awning rail strip and the grommets. It is 12x8.5. Had to move my machine to the dining table so I would have room to work with it. I had to run back to get more bias tape and ended up not getting the double fold. One word on that make sure you get enough plus maybe extra as I had a hard time getting more. I didn't go with white, mine on the scallops is a teal/turquoise color and then I used tan on the seams. I will try and get it spread out and take a picture or 2. I bought my material on sale last year and actually changed my mind on the colors for my camper paint but oh well it will still work. I need to make 1 or 2 more for my fan, it has awning rail on both sides. Not so sure I will do the scallop edges on those, maybe just straight across. I just kept getting frustrated trying to fit it up in those little spaces. Would have gone much faster otherwise.

I think that having the seam going horizontal won't be a problem at all! Nobody will even notice. Just as long as you line-up the stripes like lovnvintage mentioned.
Also, as far as the scallops go. I need to add to my tutorial that the more fluid and shallow you make the scallops the easier it is to sew on the bindings. So make the scallops look more like a sound wave than saggy br-----....um....well just let your imagination run on that one.
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the fun and flirty awnings people are jumping in and making!!!

I guess the one good thing about my material (besides the fact it matches my trailer so well) is that it doesn't seem to have a 'good side' and a 'bad side'...I can't tell one side from the other, so hopefully that may mask a bit of the seam that will run the wrong way. Redwings, how far down do you like the drop on the sides? Lovnvintage said she did about 7.5 inches?

It sure is purdy Brenda! And that is a bonus that there is a pattern on both sides too!

Here's a photo of our awning showing the poles fairly clearly. Each pole has two lines each with a stake. My wife made this awning and it works very well but it is pretty large to the point where we've considered modifying it to be a foot or so narrower. 1963 Shasta Airflyte by dwstucke, on Flickr
