Hi. I just bought a 1980 Shasta 2550, bunkhouse model, as best I can tell so far. The door frame was so out of square that the po removed the door. A hydraulic jack in front of the door corrected that, and the door is back on, and working. Clearly, the wood part of the frame, under the door, is damaged. how do I start the repair? I'm still reading, but haven't found any pictures of that yet. Thanks, H.

Hey Howard, can you visually see any problems with the wood you can access under the trailer, mainly the support sytem? If nothing visual, have you poked around with an ice pick to see if the wood is punky? That may be a starting point to ID'ing what may need to be done. I know these trailers (speaking only from what I've learned and not a ton of first hand experience) were notorious for leaks around windows, vents, and yes... door frames so if that is the case with yours, you may find damage that radiates from higher to lower around your door which would require some fixing. Just my meager .02

Hi again RJ. I haven't crawled under it yet. Still cleaning, and exploring. I think I saw a metal belly pan joined to the metal siding, so I haven't seen any wood there yet, but I'm sure it's there, and rotten. I won't be able to de-skin it till spring, but I could peel up a bit of siding to access what I suspect is a long piece of wood, if that would allow me access for a temporary strengthening. I'm big on treated wood, and steel reinforcement where I can use it. I think this behemoth is too big for me to ever strip completely. Probably just bits at a time. Still, I'm excited with the new Fortress of Solitude. H.
