Silly question here. In removing and replacing skins and windows, is there any issue in going back into the same holes? My fear would be that the screws wont bite or will strip when going back into the same old hole (assuming everything lines up properly). - Is this an issue?
- Use slightly longer or larger diameter screws?
- Trick to fix ones that do strip the wood out?
Thx

If a screw doesn't hold I take shaving/plug of wood, drive it into the hole then reinsert the screw. If the wood isn't rotted this should solve problem. If the board is rotted there is no good solution except pull skin and repair framing.

You're also going to find that the screw holes may not line up exactly the same. Don't fret this, I did at first and learned it's not really a big deal. The skins tend to stretch a little and replacing rotten stuff just changes the way they fit a bit since the skins had settled into the *rotten wood shape*.
If you do have holes that do not line up when you put the skins back on, cover them with gutter seal. One little hole can drip a whole lot of water. I found this out when it rained before I had my eyebrow over my back window. I thought I had the holes sealed but one wasn't and it drip, drip, dripped.

When ever I use the old holes, if it will work, and many times it does, I use one size up from the original. So #6s move up to #8s and old #8 holes move up to #10... Works well with windows, brows and J Rail. same with skin and doors.

I Gorilla Glue toothpicks or dowels in the old holes, then trim flush. They can be "started" with a nail set; just a tap. Always use the same size screws with this method and they bite very well.
