Hi,
My trailer, as seen in my avatar was re painted at sometime or another and it's starting to show through. The bare aluminum comes through all over the trailer since the paint is cracked in a 7 million places. I assume that the paint will come off fairly readily since its so old.
I was wondering will the paint in its current condition help to protect the aluminum vs. spending time now to remove the paint and then having it sit exposed to the elements until it would be painted which is going to be a while.
cheers
Rod

Rod, this is only my opinion, but I suggest leaving the paint as is until you are ready to totally prep and repaint. My 62 had very little paint left on it and even cleaning the old dead paint off left it vulnerable for more exposure to the elements and corrosion. If it has sat for years like it is, a few more months won't make that much difference.

Not sure I understand WHAT you trying to protect it from? It's lasted sixty years already, a few more days or weeks should not make much difference.
If your going to reuse the skin, I would strip it well before you reinstall the windows, or all your hard work on the windows will be wasted. I like to paint my trailers with the windows, and edge trim off.
I would consider "stripping the old paint", and "prepping for the new paint" as two entirely different steps.

Thanks John and Susie,
I don't plan on painting for what will probably turn into a year. Funds are tight and so is managable time. It's somewhat unatractive sitting in the driveway and stripping the paint off the top half would make it look better, but a year under the sun and some so cal rain might dull it and then that's probably more work to bring back the shine than waiting and then stripping the paint off when I finally start to paint.
I will be pulling skins and yes, I agree, it will look better if painted with all the windows and trim out.
Cheers
Rod
