Hi, I have two empty holes in the back of my 57 Westerner where the tail light assemblies use to sit. They are 4" in diameter. All the replacements I have found are 4.5" wide. I don't want to cut the hole bigger. Are the Bargeman 99's the only ones that fit into those. I believe it originally came with the wedding cake tail light lenses and assemblies, but not sure. I have come across making your own with paint can lids and just the stock replacements with the larger diameter. Just wondering if there is anything else out there that fit that diameter hole. Thanks Rod

My 57 also had 4" cutouts for the tail lights. A PO had replaced the original assemblies. They were quite rusted, so I replaced with these: www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Trail_Lite_No_98_Complete_Assembly_1_Bulb_p/vts-676.htm. The two light version (Trail Lite 99) would work as well. I did not cut the hole any bigger. The new assemblies covered the old cutouts completely, plus they are stainless, and bright. The only issue may be the mounting holes. Since I added wood backers, I wasn't restricted to using the old mounting holes. While I was at it, I also ran grounds to the tail lights.

Bargman 99s are surface mounted, they don't fit into a hole...
Be sure to get a light with a big enough flange so you can putty and protect the hole. The holes are a major leak source in our old hams. Also be sure not to mount the light with the wires pointing down, it allows condensation to drip down. I like to mount with the sockets at one side.

I was on there the night before and got all befuddled as I couldn't put it together(no pun intended). I have 3 holes on one side and 5 on the other side for mounting. It looks like the lights were just screwed to the aluminum skin. How did you get the wood backers in? We're they made of 1/4" plywood? Thanks turbo daddy for the link fix. Good gawd, how,did he amass so much? It seems like it would be easier just to contact him than scan the listings. thanks, Rod

The backers are installed before the skins go back on. They will need a hole for the wiring and/or light body, wood where the screws will go...

Its really interesting how some folks have developed these odd little specialties into a business. AJ had several amber lenses, I got 'em for $8 each which seemed pretty fair. They arrived in a few days and were in good condition. He also let me return one item for exchange. Excellent service.
While I'm on here, Also excellent service...Rex Conaway made me a new "FAN" emblem, sent it to me a couple weeks ago. It go sent from CA, made it to RI, then for some reason went BACK to CA. Thinking it was lost, he made and shipped me another a few days ago. This morning I went to the PO and BOTH were there. They look perfect. I'll be posting pics soon of finished paint job..the emblem will be a nice final touch.

As Vikx replied, backers were installed with the rear skin removed. This also allowed running new wiring and grounds. I found the Trail Lite 98 a good option for a replacement assembly. But if no wood backer can be installed, it might be difficult to attach the lens mounting plate to the skin using pre-existing mounting holes. The wood backing allowed a good snug fit of the lens backing plate, as well as good compression of butyl tape. The backers were left over 1x poplar strips.

Thanks Rod What you had were recessed canisters and matching lenses. Here they are at VTS. www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Recessed_Canister_p/vts-584.htmI have a video on how to rebuild the old ones but you need new.
