The door handle on my 68 Compact lifts up instead of pulls down to open. I thought this was a little strange and then noticed on the inside of the door screw holes that had beed patched in the same position as the current latch holes just a little higher up. So I'm wondering if the PO replaced the handle and latch with one from a driver's side door. Does this sound right or does anyone know of another reason for this? Nutty PO's! The red arrow is the direction the handle goes. I'm not pointing to that other thing!

You can install your handle in any one of four positions 90 degrees off from each other.

John, Do the outside handles normally hang vertically? That would make more sense I guess. I still wonder about the inside screw holes though. Thanks.

I understand what you are saying Lance and I just went and looked at mine. I just rebuilt my door and my handles are on my kitchen counter right now but I'm almost certain that they originally pulled down, not up. And it does look like the PO might have turned yours upside down from the original position. Mine only has two screw holes each on the top and bottom. But I'm a little bewildered at how that is possible since the inside handle can only go one direction.
So, I just looked at mine again and your inside handle is upside down compared to mine, like its innards were put in on the opposite side and turned upside down.

SusieQ, that's why I was thinking it might be a door latch from a drivers side door. Everything would be a mirror image not just turned upside down.

SusieQ, it's because the inside latch mechanism is made in both a right hand, and a left hand version. It you mix them up, they turn in an awkward position to open.
They also come both "with", and "without" the inside door lock knob.

This brings back old memories. Most people have a brand new wrong way latch set lying around until they find a use for it. When I ordered my first one it was wrong of course. Ordered the right one and was in business but had this other handle lying around for years. I suggest you just buy both and get it over with. Saves time. The inside latch set is the determining factor. The outside handle goes either way. They are actually called "Cab Latches".... They come from old work truck cab door parts.

Mobiltec, if you look at my inside pic you can see where there was once a different latch that was mounted higher. I think you are right and for some reason the PO mounted a "wrong way" latch.

Definitely looks like it was a wrong-side latch mounted in place of a broken original. Looks as though it would be the right size to flip over, and would cover the markings pretty closely. Of course that would not work. Replacements are not all that hard to find, nor expensive...so buying both to get that out of the way won't break ya... ;-) www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Canned_Ham_Door_Latch_p/vts-215.htm

Hey, Just looked at VTS and saw their latches. I have one more question. Do I need to get a left or right door latch? I don't want to end up with another "wrong way" latch! Thanks for your help on this.

Thanks for your help on this. Call VTS and they will run you through a simulation with your hand as opposed to which way the door opens... I would still just go ahead and order both LOL.

You also used to be able to buy the outside handle with two keys at Ace Hardware in the garage door section. Probably still can don't know.

Some Ace Stores have them and most don't from what I've seen. Most of them just have the T handle. If you are into it you can get all new baggage door latches to and they will have everything keyed alike for you.
