Hi there, first post... I looked at a vintage ('40's) home built trailer today. It is 6x12 teardrop style. It is an aluminum shell on an angle iron frame. The seller (who I think acquired it back in the spring) had a new axle, hubs, leaf springs and tongue installed. To my eye the work looks decent. My concern is the angle iron frame which is very rusted. It doesn't look "flaky" but it does look very pitted (?) almost bubbly over the entire surface. Is it likely that I could grind or brush it clean and paint with rust paint? How much rust is too much? Thanks Kyle

How much rust is too much? Enough to allow it to break or bend and I don't think anyone can answer that from looking at a picture. Surface rust with a small amount of pitting shouldn't hurt anything. If you see areas that the edge is rusted away or there are holes completely through the metal then it has probably crossed the line. If it is still strong you can clean it up and treat it with one of the many rust convertors on the market , then paint it to prevent farther deterioration.

Thanks for the good answer, BigBill. It looks like surface rust over the entire area. There are no apparent holes or bad edges that I could see. I'm encouraged. Many thanks. K
