Hi,
I hope you will indulge me. While I don't have a vintage trailer... (yet). I am on the prowl for one.
I do however have a 1985 pop up that I have fixed up a bit. I want her bright and shiny for the Hurkey Creek, Vintage trailer rally in southern California in a few weeks.
I found a very very close matching dark brown spray paint for the lower 1/3 of the trailer that I used when I bought her 6 years ago. At that time, I only had painted the frame. It's a tiny bit faded now, so I went and painted the front end and it's really nice - seriously, rattle can and all with satin finish.
I cleaned the portion of the trailer to be painted today and the paint was coming off onto the paper towel I was using. I do admit, that I was using Krud Kutter. So, maybe that was the problem.
So, here is my question.
Now that the front is painted, if I spray with a clear coat, will it stop the paint from rubbing off when I clean it?
BTW, I don't often use the krud cutter, I usually wash the trailer with car soap and warm water. Waxing the paint will make the application rag brown, so I don't usually wash the painted part, but the aluminum siding higher up looks great when waxed.
Thanks

No, it will not. If the paint is turning loose, it does not have a good adhesion to the metal or the paint under it has peeled from the metal. In the future, if you get down to bare metal, try using a self-etching primer in rattle can before painting. Rustoleum makes on.
