This might be a stupid question but can you use your TT 12 volt battery to provide power to the electric brakes in the event that it might become disconnected from the tow vehicle? I'm only asking because these battery packs in these break away kits are huge and didn't more stuff mounted to the trailer tongue. I'm sure it could be mounted elsewhere but it just made me curious as to why you can't use the existing battery. As long as it was fully charged I don't see any harm in it. Am I missing something??

To my knowledge all you are required to have is a 12 volt battery located on the trailer itself with wiring and charge capable of supplying adequate current to set brakes if trailer disconnects from tow vehicle. Most of the time you are better off using your on board system battery because you maintain it better. Many people buy the battery pack just for their brakes and install it then forget it never checking its condition and it dies so it might as well not be there but if their trailer battery goes bad they are going to fix it right away.

It makes perfect sense. I think I'm going to wire that way instead of an additional battery pack. Thanks for the info.

I thought they all used the TT battery....I have never seen one with this battery pack thing. Maybe its if you dont have a battery on your trailer

They all used to come that way and some new kits come that way. I think most use the on board battery now.

Cargo trailers and the like need the little aux. battery.
