Perhaps this product is too good to be true, but I'm looking for a beginners solution to going from a 4-way flat plug on my tow vehicle to a 7-way round on my 13' trailer. www.walmart.com/ip/Hopkins-47185-Multi-Tow-Adapter/16782535Has anyone had any experience with this item or items similar to it? Any and all suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

Yup - I've got one on my Tacoma. Here it is at Amazon, a little cheaper and 2-day shipping if you've got Prime: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002Q80GS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Works exactly as you suspect - plug your 4-pin on your tow vehicle into this product and you've got a 7-pin socket with the function of a 4-pin. And it's got pigtails for the other 3 pins that you can wire for brakes, charging, etc.

This is a waste of time and money.
It is not a plug in and use it product. You still would need to run your hot battery wire, your blue brake wire, and then connect them to this mickey mouse plug.
A seven way plug is cheaper, and neater when installed. Plus it's not any more difficult to install.
If you have a seven way plug on your tow vehicle, and need to tow a small trailer with a four way plug, just pick up a four way adapter at any Autozone/O'Reilly's, etc. for five bucks.

If your trailer has electric brakes on it they are there for a reason. Most likely because the law required them. They will require a brake controller and a seven way receptacle on your tow vehicle. In the advent of an accident any knowledgeable police officer sees a four way connection he knows the brakes are not hooked up and this could even lead to criminal charges be filed against you even though you were not at fault in your driving, just because you were operating an illegal vehicle no brakes on trailer.

No electric brakes on my little trailer. I appreciate your all of your suggestions. My brother in law (skilled electrician) is doing my electrical. I was confused about the difference between brake lights and electric brakes (mortified to even admit that!) I thought that I needed a 7-way so that the brake "lights" would function. My brother in law laughed for a solid hour. I'm going to crawl under a rock and hide for a couple of weeks.....

I have an adapter I use with my small four pin trailer when I pull it with our truck that is wired for 7 pin. It works just fine. I think I got mine at Auto Zone or Advanced Auto. It was about $13. Here is a similar one on Amazon and it has the LED lights to show you the vehicle's plug is working (that can come in handy, I paid $10 just for the light tester when I was in a pinch). www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002RNSKK/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1535523722&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00CI6DJZM&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1NAR7C1H637SZQ2W00CT
