I thought I'd share some of the better moments of our trip to the Northwest. We drove from VA to St. Louis then across Kansas (oh, it was forever and the only scenery that changed was the wind farms) straight through to CO. We were on a timeline and could only spend one night in CO but I can't wait to go back. We stopped and talked to the National Forest Rangers. The campground I had originally picked before our trip was full but the ranger was so nice and suggested a campground that would make it easy for me to continue my journey without back tracking. We stayed in Arapaho National Forest and had an entire loop to ourselves with nicest cleanest pit toilets I've ever seen. It was terribly hot during the day and rained very light before we went to bed. Apparently, it sleeted overnight because we woke up freezing with ice on the camper and my door handles on my car were frozen. Brrrr, what a surprise! This site was just past the Winter Park area on 125. When we left and continued on 125 we spotted a huge vintage camper graveyard. I thought my son was going to jump out of the car because I wouldn't stop. Oh, it was cold when we pulled out! DSC02057 by susieqilvu, on Flickr Rafting the Payette River in McCall, ID. Class III rapids and one huge drop! This is going under Rainbow Bridge. Sunset on the lake at Ponderosa State Park, McCall, ID. Great campground, highly recommended. DSC02077 by susieqilvu, on Flickr Malad Gorge State Park, ID (somewhere between Boise and Twin Falls) This is a day park but worth the $5 to see the Gorge. On the other side of the park is a pond or lake that you can walk out in and it has picnic tables and grills in the water Sunset on the Snake River, Twin Falls, ID Somewhere in WY My son took this "drive by" pic of Mt. Rushmore through my car window. Love it.

This was a great private campground in Custer, ID just a few miles from Custer Mountain and Mt. Rushmore. Quite lovely with decent facilities, even a pool. Most of the others were what we call parking lot campgrounds. The National Forest campgrounds were beautiful but we needed something fast and with power. We also drove through the Badlands and I snapped quite a few pics but I sure would have liked to have camped there.

Yes, reservations do go quickly in the popular spots. We had reservations 9 months in advance for Ponderosa SP in McCall, ID and when I was stranded, they were nice enough to find me a spot that was canceled because the park was booked and they were turning people away. However, I'm not a reservation kind of person. If look for NF campsites and private campgrounds, you can usually find something. We pulled in late to one SP and ended up paying for a double site because all the singles were reserved. There was plenty of room of in the Custer park outside of Mt. Rushmore and the NF campgrounds really near Mt. Rushmore had plenty of sites. I also stayed three nights right outside of Boise in Garden City and it was almost full but we had a great spot next to the river and Boise Greenbelt path/trail. It's an awesome paved path that goes for miles along the river and into and around the city. And if we hadn't been stranded, we'd have hit Custer during Sturgis bike rally which were told was a big mess. However, the farm tractors, hundreds of them, were in town. They all drove past our campground at 5 mph on their way out.

They all drove past our campground at 5 mph on their way out. That was probably cool. I just sold my last antique farm tractor yesterday. I had hauled it to a dealer in Indiana to let him sell it and I wasn't sure how good of an idea that would turn out to be but he sold it for enough to pay his commission and net me $100.00 more than I was asking. It is great to know that there are still some honest people in the world.
