My husband says I'm in denial and that this poor thing is beyond help. It's full of putty and tar and was painted with silver paint. Not to mention the huge dent in the top. I don't have any place big enough to soak it, to soften things up. I was wondering if a hair dryer would work? Can she be saved? It is worth my time and energy?

Sure, No Problem!
Take it apart, drill out the rivets, and "carefully" hammer and dolly it back into shape. Use a flat faced hammer and a flat dolly so you don't stretch the metal any more than necessary. Do NOT hammer out the circle, it's a stiffener for the lid. Sand it, then Polish it on a buffing wheel, and it will look like chrome. Pop rivet it back together and use a little urethane sealer on the bottom of the rivets if you don't have the correct solid rivets.
About an hours work.
Or $50 bucks for a new one.

John, can't you do it for me? LOL! You make it sound soooo easy. Thank you for your help! I'll print this out so dh will know how to take it apart and put back together.
I bought a new one last year and it's still sitting in the box. I hate the cheap plastic crap on the inside.
I was thinking of using the top from the new on the old. I would rather fix this one because it's original. Thanks again!

LOL, I've been doing aluminum windows for the past week, and still have another week to go, a little more black aluminum soot and grim won't make much difference.

I worked on a ton of trim this past week. My new method is wet soapy sanding with a fine block and Fels Naptha soap. Kind of like peanut butter that fell into chocolate. It's really working well. It may have a few dings and dents but it's clean, shines and has character:)
Now I wear rubber gloves and an apron. Learned the hard way after my shirt was covered in grey.
Still to come... brows, windows and doors.
