Trip Report! and park revue. Happy Summer 2014 fellow campers and restorers. If you ever get the chance to visit the great state of North Carolina, I highly recommend a few days at a true Carolina treasure, Hanging Rock State Park. While not going to deep into the Geological oddity of these three sibling mountains Hanging rock, Pilot Mountain and Sauratown Mountain, Hanging Rock has it all. The hiking trail system in this park is one of the best in the NC system. The parks location to the Dan river makes it ideal as a base of operation for tubing, kayaking and canoeing as well. There is now a designated river access within the park though it’s easiest access is by car. The parks close proximity to the cities of Greensboro and Winston Salem make it ideal for many to get away for a three day weekend or day hike. Hit the links attached for more info, the park has a rather interesting past. But I am talking Camping and the campground is a true jewel. The sites are well appointed in 90% of the layout. Most of the sites within the inner circle of the upper loop will accommodate small campers and popups very well. Most of the campsites in the outer rim of the loops are better suited for tents. One of the good things about online reservations is that many host programs have a snap shot or two of the campsites. You can spot the level drives, the open areas and just how close your next door neighbor will be located. There are no hookups, cable TV, sewer or paved driveways here. The restrooms are clean and they are well appointed. The water was hot and seem to stay that way to. Privacy curtains and/or doors on the shower stalls are always a plus to. So, you will have to “Boon Dock” a little, but such is the sacrifice. I ran fans, party lights and “getting around juice” for three nights and had no problem. On our scale 1 to 5, identifying the simple, secret, nice camping places still around.. Hanging Rock State Park gets a 3-1/2.. www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/haro/photos.phpen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanging_Rock_State_ParkWe had to "tarp out" a little bit For Friday as storms were brewing but never really washed us out.

Wow! Thanks for the review. I have actually searched for campgrounds in the Greensboro area in the past as it is on one of my routes "home" that I traveled regularly for a while until I changed to my TN route. After 7 years of the TN route, I'm ready for a change again.

After 7 years of the TN route, I'm ready for a change again. If you give us a heads up when you travel through next time we'd love to show you a couple of spots still around Szq. They are all to soon becoming discovered. Internet reservations are really convenient and a wonderful tool. However after talking with a ranger on this trip, some patrons are stretching it abit. Mind you, they are paying and it's there right. But Ranger rick said that so many are just booking sites like they are season tickets to a hockey game. So many never show up or change there minds the day before and haggle over a partial refund. I guess it is easier on the park system, but sux if they got my spot..

Good to get this report on a park that sounds worth a visit someday. I wonder if there are similar posts that would list other areas, especially in the mid-Atlantic region, that are worthy of a visit? State parks/campgrounds that are hidden gems, where time hasn't caught up, and the masses haven't found?

Maddan, I don't know what part of the Mid-Atlantic you are interested in but I can post some state park, NP, and NF info from the parks that I have visited in VA when I get a chance. There are some real gems here!

SusieQ, That would be great. We live in Ohio. Most every year we travel thru WVA and VA to vacation in an OBX beach house. We always say sometime it would be fun to hitch up the trailer, and venture off I64 to see what we are missing. My current restoration will prohibit us from doing that this year, but its never too late to plan some camping adventures in 2015. I would be happy to see what you recommend in VA. Its beautiful passing thru, and I'm sure there's a lot more to see off the beaten path.
